That's fair enough - if people look to this kind of advice and find they get some useful replies on here, that's fine. Personally, I freely admit to having no interest in recommendations for a good bar/restaurant in a place I've never been to, and am very unlikely ever to visit - but no way do such threads irritate me, nor do I call for them to be banned.I enjoy them, and I have asked for advice before. Lots of well travelled people on here, which is a great resource for insider knowledge - indispensable when you're away, and marginally less moronic than TripAdvisor.

Yep, that's my approach to visiting somewhere I don't know too - it works fine for me. But live and let live, each to his own.I've found strolling around the place you're staying and, as a last resort, asking locals, to have served me well over the last few years.
