Apparently so.

So you're suggesting we try something that is pretty much totally untested against something we know works EXCELLENTLY well?

Hmm....

Needs to drop Lennon who was out of his depth and bring in cole.

James

Johnson. Upson. Terry. A Cole

J cole. Lampard. Barry. Gerrard

Heskey. Rooney.

The only change I would possibly make to the above would be to drop heskey and play gerrard in behind rooney with cole on the left and SWP on the right. Can't see us not playing 2 strikers against Algeria though.

I wouldn't drop Lennon personally. Ok, he didn't play his best, but more than once he flashed past their left back (crosses always went behind our strikers, which is a problem, but maybe they don't all need to go so far forward). Interacts with Johnson well too. Not sure about J Cole at all, flashes of brilliance and long periods of nothingness.

This is the only way to play. We have to make the most out of the players we have and that means chosing a formation to suit the players, not the other way round.

Unfortunately Capello is so stubborn with a rigid 4-4-2 that I can't see him dropping it. Would love to be proved wrong though.

there's nothing wrong with either chosing a formation to suit players or sticking to a formation. the problem i forsee is trying to do both, so end up with players not in their best position compromising both them and the formation. besides, i dont think the 4-4-2 is suppoed to be rigid other than in defence, where it is good to have.

Why are people so anti-Gerrard playing on the left? He was SUPERB there throughout qualifying, linked up perfectly with Rooney.

but isnt he better in the middle? given the choice between Gerrard and Barry in the middle and Joe Cole out on the left, or Lampard and Barry middle with Gerrard out wide, the former seems to make more sence and give greater balance. im no Lampard hater, i just dont think he fits the 4-4-2.

as far as centre backs go, expect Carrager or Upson to start with Dawson coming on second half if we are a couple of goals up. needs the experience.

Barry will play and it will be a choice between Heskey and Defoe - fact. Capello says so!!

A bit more England news for you. Coach Fabio Capello says "Barry will play, and I will decide on two other positions. The goalkeeper is one, yes, and also the second striker - Emile Heskey or Jermain Defoe."

Interesting.

Very interesting. If Defoe is looking lethal in training I can see the merit in playing him against Algeria/Slovenia.

PLEASE let's bang 3 or 4 past Algeria on Friday. And PLEASE let's have a clean sheet.

Whenever Gerrard starts on the left, he has the freedom to come inside. He may start there, but he is under instruction not to rigidly stay there. It isn't an either/or, starting him on the left doesn't preclude him from coming through the middle.

That's how it was in the qualifiers, and that's likely how it will be on friday, with lampard, heskey, green all retaining their places.

Carragher may get the start based on experience, but I'd prefer upson or dawson.

Lennon's crossing may be an issue, but will probably start. We're changing a defender and midfielder already, we don't want to make wholesale changes.

Cos it will f*** the shape of the team up. He'll go with Heskey

Algeria will play 1 up front, Surely 442 is pointless? They have pace on the flanks but so do we, We need to beat them by a few to get the confidence going and to give us the lead in our group.
