He actually how tragic it was that his career and life was ended by such a stupid mistake.

You're old enough to remember that England's non qualification of the 1974 World Cup was partly due to drink driving.

Gordon Banks was drink driving(and also not wearing a seatbelt) when he went through his windscreen in 1972 and lost an eye.

Many believe at that time he was the best keeper in the world, we failed to qualify after failing to beat Poland at Wembley partly due to the ball going under Shilton, we will never know but if Banks had been in goal it might have been a different result. (And England would have gone to West Germany in 74)
