This tory line about 'not knowing just how bad it was' really is a load of bull isn't it, I'm glad no one is falling for it.

The arse end of Hangleton
Usuually she's pretty good but last night was cringeworthy. The Lib Dem made a much better case for cuts without getting everyones back up.

I used to think so but since they got in every time she's opened her mouth she's put her foot in it.

She's normally very good but last night not so good. That's what being in power does for you.

And I think there's some truth in what she said about not knowing just how bad the financial situation really was.

I'm getting annoyed with the QT audience, who generally have failed to grasp the severity of the situation. Everybody will have to pay more and lose some benefits - deal with it people.

It wouldn't be much of a programme if everyone simply agreed with Conservative policies.

But the deficit is less than estimated by thetreasury in march, is growing less than estimated in April and income is higher than estimated also in April. All this has been verified by the OBR. So how can it have been worse than they thought?
I can stomach differences of opinion on ideology about is debt acceptable and how quickly should it be settled but to kees scaring people that it's so much worse is plain ludicrous.

I take your point, but Treasury forecasts have proved to be very inaccurate in recent years, and the Tories formulated their manifesto commitments some months ago.

I think the public needs to cut them some slack. Changes to tax and benefits have to be made and people need to accept it. Given the severity of the situation it's actually not that much pain, i.e. no changes to the Basic Rate of tax, NI or corporation tax.

Because class divisions are always transcended by patriotism and national unity when Britain is faced by clearly identifiable foreign enemy or military threat? Against Hitler, we really were 'all in this together'.

But I'd rather pay a bit more tax if the alternative is losing my job....

I don't think many people are crying because of cuts that supposedly hit the middle class, maybe the Daily Mail, apart from that it seems to be the cackhanded and unfair nature of the child benefit cut and the fact they campaigned on a promise not to cut child benefit.

Clearly most people aren't buying the Conservatives line that it's just like the war, they need to make better arguments than that and then reverting to "but Labour haven't said what they'll do" when anyone questions anything (if they haven't noticed Labour aren't in government, really they're irrelevant at the moment) if they want to win people over.
