'Taking the division, moving the clubs around, then I would suggest the clubs below have a lower budget and those above have a bigger budget. There may be a couple in the wrong place but in terms of being 17th, we are there or there abouts.

I think maybe 17th in terms of money being paid to players in wages is probably correct.

Forest with a smaller budget than us? Find that very hard to believe.

Agree with most of that, apart from perhaps Derby and Reading.

Was on the train back north last week and speaking to a Derby fan, they don't reckon they're budgets much at all. They've cleared all the top earners out, and have brought in people like Theo Robinson, and a couple of Scottish players from lower end clubs. Reading supposedly have a wage cap in place, which is (if you believe broad opinion) somewhere between 8-10k a week, and they're outlay compared to funds recieved was next to nothing.

On the basis we spent £4.5m this summer, if you trimmed that down to the equivalent spend compared to most teams (say £1m), that's an extra £3.5 million outlay, or around 60k a week added to our wage bill.

What many of you are forgetting is that we got quite a lot of money in for Bennett etc. so, the overall expenditure is less than you are guessing.

You can't blame Keith Hill for thinking it's the case when he sees us paying £1m plus for 3 different strikers.

For what it's worth, I think he's a very decent manager. His Rochdale side were one of the few teams we didn't beat last season, and I was impressed yesterday that Barnsley stuck to playing football even when they were 2-0 down. I must admit, I came into the game expecting them to be a dull, stereotypical Northern long ball team, and was pleasantly surprised that wasn't the case. I'm sure there will be plenty of worse teams than them this season, it's just a question of whether they can either (a) find a decent striker to get on the end of their moves, or (b) work on their long range shooting, which was frequent, but useless.

I have a lot of time for Keith Hill, seems like a decent and knowledgeable chap.
However, what point is he trying to make here? It isn't really any of his concern what our budget is, and my suggestion to him would be that if you have a small budget, don't go wasting wages on players like f***ing Craig Davies.

According to what I assume is your FM2012 data, Vicente's on £15k a week. Are you saying that 'average' players at Southampton are on £45k?

FWIW I can believe that we're not, overall, one of the top wage payers in this division. But I don't think making us out as some kind of paupers is right either.

Can't see that either.

I'm sure they're paying plenty- Jose Fonte, for example, wouldn't have signed for a League One club (as they were then) from a Championship club for rubbish wages. Lambert is probably on a decent whack, if only to pay for his pie bill, and players like Jack Cork will be well reimbursed as they were signed from Premier League teams.

But they're not (surely?) paying £45k per week to anyone.
