Just watched his after match comments on Barnsley Player ... he talked about Gus's comments on being 17th in terms of budget and he said "I don't know how he does his maths but our entire team cost half of one of their players" (CMS I guess)

Also noticed they do extended highlights on their player ... wonder when we'll get ours?

But when you include both the cost of transfer fees and wages, I can't see how we're 17th either. I don't believe it at all.

It is a baffling comment and I believe has not gone down well internally, as it is NOT the case, mid table maybe, but saying we are 17th/18th is insulting to those down there

Maybe his budget is the worst in the league and way adrift of most of the others? Bit like us last time that we were in this division

I wonder whether different clubs measure their budgets in different ways. Some managers seem to have to manage their budgets to include wages, bonuses and transfer fees. Other manager don't seem to have to worry about transfer fees, as the board/chairman will find the money if the manager can find the player.

I suspect that there is no right or wrong answer in this debate.

We all know that Gus had an off night with his comments on that occasion in virtually every respect. Not a problem, he was probably feeling the pressure a bit, and I'd be surprised if he wasn't.

There is no way our budget is 17th.

I agree. Transfer fees are one thing and usually widely known but wages are a completely different kettle of fish.

It's one of those statements designed to raise morale (get people thinking the Albion aren't doing that bad after all) rather than necessarily be true. I think people are reading too much into whether it's accurate.

As this is our first season in Falmex shouldn't that 90m be included in this years budget? :)

Just far enough away from LDC
Given the year on year investment by other teams it is possible that our team total cost is about 17th in this division.

But based on this season for transfer fees or what i suspect we are paying in wages, I would be surprised is there are 16 teams in this division above us in either or a mix of both these criteria

Well yes it was obviously designed to raise morale, we all know that. But lets be honest, if it's clearly complete bullshit then it is going sound desperate rather than morale boosting isn't it?

Remember when we were told over the sum we'd have a top 6 budget? Well that doesn't magically turn into 17th does it...

No one's going to be bothered to add all the transfer outlays of 24 Championship clubs, deduct money they've received, and accurately guess how much of their budget they haven't spent. So there's no way it's clearly bullshit. It may be bullshit, but not clearly bullshit!

I remember being told we had about the 6th highest budget in league one, and that when we moved up to the championship gus thought we'd be around 12th-14th in terms of budget.

It does if things are reviewed and recalculated. Maybe they just reassesed and realised with other incomes factored in, we're well below what we thought we were?

That's what I remember too which is why I asked Hustpierpoint for proof of his statement. 12-14th has now been revised to 17th so not a great deal of difference considering the end of the transfer window in Aug and loan signings since.
