No. He is just an idiot. We have him so we take him as he is, and short tem we need him.

Can we rely on him ? No. So first chance - get rid.

He has had the same number of red cards as Greer, who was just as stupid when he got his. I haven't seen calls for getting rid of him.

Come on, NOTHING is a stupid as trying to trip a Ref. That is off the stupid scale.

Greer deliberately headbutting an opponent is stupid. When he arrived at the club, he couldn't play for two matches as he'd been sent off in a play off game that let his team mates down.
I was at the Bolton game, I saw it happen and have spoke to Barnesy since. I still maintain (and I realise I may be on my own with this) that it was more of an accidental trip, catching the back of the ref's heel than deliberate. That's just my opinion.

No way surely. He hasn't played for 7 games so will be rusty. I imagine he will only be used off of the bench for the next few games. Maybe start the Wolves game.

Is there a DS game this week that he can get some game time in?

Well then you do not think it was stupid. To those of us that saw it as a deliberate move to the ref and deliberate trip it was asinine and shows a level of idiocy that suggests the player may not be relied on.

I think the trip was deliberate and am stunned at just how stupid Barnes was to do it. But I still LOVE him. This could be the making of him as a true Albion legend. Gus hinted at finding out why Barnes is like he is on the pitch so it will be fascinating to see how his time away and any action the club has taken has an affect on his game.

The lad has paid the price for his stupid act, now he must win over the boo-boys again (not the he did the first time mind). I can't wait.

Wow, I'm pleased to see so many of our fans actually wanting Gus to have more options. Makes a change from the usual stupidity here.
Am I the only one who's not happy he's back?
Ah there you are. Sadly all clubs have their share of stupid fans, so you will not be alone.

He gives us another option up front, how can that not be a good thing considering that we haven't got any experienced forwards other than Ulloa? It's bizarre not to be pleased about it imo
Indeed.

It's a fair point about back up for Ulloa, I just don't want him walking back into the starting line up!
I doubt he'll be in the starting line-up, but if he is then you can be sure there's a good reason for it. Eg, Ulloa may desperately need the rest, Ashley may have spent the last few weeks cleaning everyone's boots, doing their ironing, and being their general slave, while wearing a dunces hat. He's obviously ****ed up and perhaps he feels really stupid and has apologised to the players  If Gus wants him to play, that's good enough for me.

I am no Barnes-hater - but I am not sure he deserves to wear the stripes again. He has shown himself to be an idiot with limited ability to appreciate the irrelevance of his own petulance set against what is good for his team-mates, the club, and the supporters. If the club told him to clear off I would be fully in support.
If the club decided they wanted him to clear off, I would also be in support - but if the club decide that the best thing for the club is to have him playing, then I support that too. Deserve to wear the stripes - oh please, get over yourself. If he can help us get promoted then I'm fully behind him.

Probably. Myself - I will be cheering as loud as the next person when he knocks in the winner against Blackpool, but it does not change the fact he is an idiot and a liability.
Yes he's an idiot, he made a stupid mistake, just like Beckham ('98) and Rooney (against that shit head Ronaldo, and against Montenegro). Just because Beckham and Rooney messed up, you don't never play them again (you'd be a fool to leave them out), and the same applies to Ashley (obviously he's not at their level, but Brighton aren't at England's level, and we desperately need a striker).

the fact he is likely to walk straight back into the First Team match day Squad is really unfair.
It's not unfair. Gus will pick the team that's best for the club. If Gus thinks the 7 match game was enough punishment, why do you need to argue

Bolton? I am still pissed off with him at Wednesday's stupidity.

Agreed. I still shudder at memory of that incident at Wednesday and still incenses me but if I dwell on all of Barnes' indiscretions it won't be good for my blood pressure. At least at Wednesday he was attempting a so called 'tackle' on an opposing player. Maybe it was a coincidence that the ball was somewhere nearby............. Yes it was more 'Kung Fu' than 'FA Coaching manual' but I don't think many of us were entirely surprised to see him get the red mist.

Whereas at Bolton he just assaulted the Ref. which is about as unsporting as it gets and bordering on criminal. I think Barnes is lucky that he just got a footballing sanction. Plus in the context of the game at Bolton we had been on top and beseiging their goal with about 3mins injury time left but instead of trying to get the equaliser he ignored the game, just focused on abusing the Ref until his total stupidity took over.

I will be very interested to see Barnes' attitude when he returns, will he be on a short fuse, all petulance, pent up anger and frustration waiting to explode (I suspect thats his natural self) - or will we see a more mature persona? No doubt the opposition will do their best to niggle him now his reputation is so poor.

I think most of us want to see the competitive player we know he can be (and frankly The Albion could do with more often), but without the petulance. Can he be trusted? I also await Gus' attitude towards Barnes with interest, IMHO Barnes is lucky we are injury hit otherwise he may not have got near the team for a while.

You get over yourself. You have said nothing different from me.

Neither were as stupid as Barnes. He tripped the effing ref! It was not a rush of blood, a heat of the moment thing, a reaction even - it was a trip. On the ref.

Anyway - we need him, as you say Gus needs the options. But if we get to the play-offs and Barnes is selected I will have zero confdence he won't do anything stupid again. And Barnes will get nothing off the refs.

assault seems a pretty emotive word for someone who's foot was just caught..but then u've made your feelings known with the rest of the post

I refer you to my earlier post on a page or two earlier in this thread hoping that Barnes would return and make the headlines for the right reasons. However that doesn't overlook his trip on the Ref (.....the Ref FFS!). Clearly the FA didn't share your view that 'his foot was just caught'. Also don't overlook that the physical contact was in addition his continous verbal assault on the Ref for the previopus minute or so, so wasn't an innocent matter.

I'm not a Barnes apologist and unlike many on here have often given him the benefit of doubt in the past. But having seen the Wednesday and Bolton incidents at first hand, both of which were mind bogglingly stupid and reckless with no thought as to the outcome and bigger picture for the team, I lost virtually all of my sympathy for Barnes. I am pleased to see him back but he also has to restore our trust.

Is that the same FA that think Aguero did nothing wrong?

Ashley is a decent player who has an aggressive streak that I sometimes like and a petulant streak that serves no useful purpose. If he can harness the former and lose the latter he is of great benefit to the squad. If he can't he isn't. I am sure he knows he is at a crossroads and hope he comes back stronger.

In years to come we'll have a good laugh about that though. A sending off that will never be forgotten and is actually quite amusing, well imo anyway, even if it caused near heart attacks with the outbursts on here at the time. Very very stupid but also funny ...sorry

I agree. It's not like he assaulted someone in the street, run someone over or went on some drunken rampage. He tripped up the ref in a football game - probably on purpose. Yes it was stupid but it was also funny. The Cantona kick was funny too as was DiCanio pushing over that ref.

Exactly. I just remember watching Soccer Saturday and hearing he's been sent off for tripping the ref. I couldn't even get annoyed, I just burst into laughter.
