Surely no one can be surprised by this? You can't just have players at the top end of the game go round attempting to trip up refs. What kind of message would it send to refs at all other levels if he didn't get a lengthy stint on the sidelines? The ban could really have been longer and still been justified.

Haven't they given him a 3 game ban? He was due the 4 as a consequence of the sending off ... the FA have added 3 because of the nature of the incident. Maybe academic but I read it as 3
Definitely this

No.

This is the section from the FA Handbook:
(j) If the Commission is satisfied of the matters at (g) above, the standard punishment set out
in the Memorandum shall be withdrawn, and the Commission shall then consider, having
regard to the matters at (h) above, the level of punishment that should apply.
http://www.thefa.com/~/media/Files/TheFAPortal/governance-docs/rules-of-the-association/section-a---field-offences-in-first-team-matches.ashx (page 9)

Essentially, the initial 4 match suspension was wiped off, and replaced by a 7 game one.

He's got his ban, it was a stupid thing to do, let's move on.

But Barnes is a good and improving player. A Brighton player. He hasn't maimed anyone or committed a war crime. Why some people feel the need to express their "hate" for the guy is beyond me.

Hmm .. not sure that isn't splitting hairs. No way was the red card going to be rescinded ... he got an extra 3 for the "extreme" nature of his offence

As reported by the Beeb "the Football Association gave him an additional three-match suspension" ............ "behaviour which constituted an offence whereby the standard punishment was clearly insufficient"

Either way he can go and twiddle his thumbs till late April

Why would the Albion want to sack when Poyet classes him as one of our best players. I can only recall a professional player having his contract terminated when he has been found guilty of a drugs offence or been sent to Prison. The Fa have rightly banned Barnes on he word of the referee , who they should always back. A offence of tripping the referee shown on very inconclusive videos hardly warrants a sacking.

Obviously they would not, as I made clear (or at least tried to), nor would I. It was a theoretical question as the maximum fine for such stupidity was only two weeks. This will cost the Albion a lot more than that; his wages for doing nothing, and a loan player's to replace him.

The relative merits of the actions of a footballer on another, and an assault on a match official, and clearly two very different things. Football needs to take a note of how rugby players respect match officials, and in fairness it tends to be returned in the way rugby refs speak to players.

What type of example does Poyet set to young players with his constant slagging-off of refs, and blaming them every time something goes wrong. Football refs should be given more respect - well except from us fans!

All 92 league managers are guilty of that

As a player he is great..........as a so called levelheaded human he is an idiot..... grow up Ashley...

Is that great as in...Puskas, Di Stefano, Edwards, Pele, Garrincha, Best, Bekenbauer, Charlton, Moore, Cruyff, Platini, Maradona, Messi and Ronaldo.? These are most of the great players of the last 60 years.
I assume from what you are saying that you put Ashley in this category.
The definition of great is....' Beyond the ordinary, important, worthy, elevated, distinguished, pre-eminent, of remarkable ability, genius, intellectual or practical qualities, or loftiness or integrity of character. '
Now lets examine Ashley on all of these...no..no..no..no..no..no..no..no..no..no..and..no.....pretty conclusive, I would say.
So we can definitely say that Ashley isn't great.
Now we move onto very good, which is one notch below great. e.g Eusebio, Finney, Greaves, Law, Muller, Zidane, Zico, Fat Ronaldo, Bergkamp, Yashin, Banks, Iniesta, Jabbi, Zoff, Rivera, etc.
So we can definitely say that Ashley isn't very good.
Now we move onto good, which is one notch below very good but some of these players could easily move between the two levels. e.g most of Brazil 1970 ( apart from Pele, see above ) Cantona, Schmeical, Peters, Riva, Gascoigne, Lineker, Ardiles, Henry, Hoddle, Drogba to name but a few.
So we can definitely say that Ashley isn't good.
Now we move onto above average which is one notch below good. e.g Gerrard, Rooney, Cole, Zola, Vicente, Saurez, Ya Ya Toure, Shearer etc
So we can definitely say that Ashley isn't above average.
Which leaves....Journeyman/Average...definition of ' journeyman '...' reliable but not outstanding worker '....does Ashley fit into this category....I'm afraid not. Reliability is not Ash's strong point.
Onto ' Average '.....' of the ordinary standard or kind '......well I'm gonna be generous here and declare, after much research, that Ashley Barnes is................................................
AN AVERAGE PLAYER!

Twerp. He very obviously meant that as a player for us, in our current team, he is great.

It's absolutely splitting hairs, (which is what prompted my reply - you suggesting it was a 3 game ban for the offence added on to his 4 game ban) ultimately, whether it's 3+1+3 or 3+1-4+7, the answer is the same. But, officially, according to the FA handbook, the equation is the latter, and I was simply clarifying it.

Who said anything about the red card being rescinded? If you haven't read the whole thing, that bit about the statutory punishment being withdrawn only happens if the commission finds that the FA have proven their case that the original punishment is inadequate. It was never a question of the punishment being reduced, or the offence wiped from the books. That only happens if the player appeals. This was a commission deciding on a Rule E3 case - that punishment needs to be more severe.

As for the BBC report, maybe they are unaware of this technicality (it might be new, or simply not important enough to make the distinction - as you say, it's splitting hairs), or simply not care about the distinction. Whether it's an addition 3 games, or a 7 game ban replacing the the original 4, it's all comes out the same.

the BBC Teletex sport says
"that Barnes appeared to trip or try to trip the referee"
WTF does that mean
were the FA looking at the same piece of grainy video we all have if so I would have an appeal in right now
whether he did or he did'nt its not conclusive
he obviously mouthed off to the ref which is I'm afraid his way and he must curb this, you will never convince me it is that conclusive
I would love to hear his take on this ...............will we ever hear that I doubt it

I am sure that most if not all are. But some, including Poyet, are worse than others.

I think there should be an official complaints proceedure if managers are unhappy about a ref's performance, with complaints being taken seriously. Other than that, there should not be any public comment about refs from managers or players.

As has been said elsewhere, Poyet's continual snipes must have a bearing upon how refs view us as a club, if if only subconciously.

Rescinded, my error!

But the 4 is withdrawn and replaced by 7 ... still seems to me the punishment was +3 unlike Suarez (used as an example earlier) which was +8

So that lynch mob otherwise know as the F.A . passed sentence without conclusive evidence. The evidence of the incident was only filmed by a Bolton supporter (not clearly) and the referees interpretation. Did Barnes have a hearing? Did they listen. I was at the match and I thought, like many others, it was for dissent Barnes was rightly upset having been thumped to the ground with an elbow in the back of the neck by a Bolton defender, might just constitute a penalty. Barnes body language was one of exasperation having been shown a red card for the ref stepping across his path. This error in judgement by the ref compounded the missed pen decision. I with a number of our supporters went to see if we could find out from Barnes what had happened. His reaction was disbelief. He said 'the ref thinks I kicked him' 'Crazy' It was clear he did not agree with the refs interpretation. He looked frustrated rather than guilty. What I saw of the refs performance I would certainly side with Barnes. He has been right royally shafted. They (FA) wanted an example to make a statement. That's all this is. Gus knows this he was nearly in trouble with the ref at the end, but managed to calm himself knowing the F.A can't wait to fill their coffers with his money.

Twerp here.....oh thats what he meant was it?...I always thought the word great meant something different, something elevated, something special. I've obviously been under a misapprehension all these years. Forgive me for wasting all your time with that lengthy missive about great.
I hang my head in shame, retire gracefully and embarrassed. I now realise that Ashley is great in the context of our team and should be treated as such. I'm sorry to have bored you all to tears about great players, which is obviously irrelevant.
" As a player for us, in our current team, he is great ".......I'm just going off to lie down in a dark room and analyse that statement and try and realise the error of my ways.
