What from I understand the stats associated with CCTV suggest it doesn't.

I'm not a fan of Graffiti either (see above:D), but close up it's actually very impressive.

Having experience with the CPS and police cctv conrtol room cctv evidence really is invaluable in securing a case at least goes to court. It is also extremely effective in preventing crime.

But that is slightly off topic.

CCTV is like anything, it can be great and it can be useless.

Despite people complaining about the cameras, when people report crime to me, the first thing they usually say is "but your cameras will have caught it, won't they?" and expect someone to be caught and convicted on that basis.

Unfortunately life isn't like The Bill, where CCTV cameras always happen to be pointing in the right direction at the exact moment something of note happens, and follow the culprits until the conclusion of events, not to mention providing flawless, real-time, high definition, full colour footage with surround sound.

Most CCTV cameras in small shops or businesses are time-lapse, black & white, fixed position kits, with no sound, and whether you get an image depends entirely on luck (and whether the suspect looks right into the lens).

But don't think you can go and rob your nearest Threshers on that basis ;)

I like Banksy a lot. He's witty, get's up to interesting 'larks' (museums etc.) and I like how a lot of his work looks.

I fear he will be the victim of the inevitable British backlash from being too popular, i.e. not underground enough for some but as long as he keeps slapping up, funny/impressive/thought provoking/attractive whatever stuff, I'll be happy.

I really like the oil canvases he adds details too, like the Monet-ish one with a shopping trolley in the pond

I completely agree. I think he is great, and very witty. I'm sure the backlash will come soon though. We're lucky in brighton to have some of his fine work and that of the rarekind guys who prove that graffiti can be street ART, every bit as valid as a painting hung in a gallery. I dislike tagging though, it's just ugly.

I think his art is really clever and makes a statement which I really appreciate, its not just there for the sake of it! Cracking stuff!

In my experience, it is only as valuable as the care put into watching it. I once had to sit (with a defence lawyer) through HOURS of CCTV and police video coverage of an incident in Brighton that was about to go to court. Eventually we were able to piece together what had really happened and establish without doubt that the wrong person had been arrested and charged. The interesting thing was that the police had managed to put together a series of edited highlights that they felt pointed incontrovertably to that wrong individual. He was very lucky to get off and only did so, thanks to changing his lawyer to someone who would listen to him and who was prepared to put the hours in at John Street.

Quite, and as Edna pointed out some cctv footage is almost unwatchable. I would still rather have cctv than not though.
