Bank transfers abroad

Is there anyway to make payments to another bank without paying a fee?

A non profit organisation i'm in needs to make payments to Spain somehow.

I doubt it. I can't see that any organisation would transfer money without charging unless it's a special deal.

I'd try whoever your non-profit banks with and see if they would do it foc as a favour, but unless the organisation is a charity rather than just a group of friends I doubt you'll get anywhere.

Or get someone to sponsor it? Again, unlikely unless you are a charity.

And if it's anything like a reasonable sum don't use one of the mainstream banks. Lots of foreign exchange specialists out there will offer you a better deal, but they'll still charge unless you can persuade them otherwise.

We use www.xe.com for for transferring funds to Europe & the US.

Good thing is that you pay in sterling into their bank in London so can transfer sterling from your UK account.

They do not charge commission for the exchange & the rates they offer are excellent.

Very easy to use as well - all internet based.

Might be worth a try ?

Hope this helps.

It doesn't cost me anything to put a British cheque into my current account here. They even credit me with the amount immediately. No idea if this would work in Spain though.

For God's sake DON'T put a British cheque into a bank account here in Spain! My bank quoted 24 days to clear one and a LOT in charges!

Nearly always best to change into euros in UK and send euros out rather than changing sterling here.

Yet more proof I chose the right place to move to. :bigwave:

As long as it's over £50 they won't charge you to withdraw
And you don't have to go through a bank - mind you it can tale a few days to clear (normally about 7 but can be quicker)

Who do you bank with? I have both english and Spanish current accounts and find the cheapest way to transfer money to Spain is by paying an English cheque, made out in sterling, in to my Spanish bank account. They give me the mid rate (ie half way between buying and selling) and charge me 0.1 per cent commission. True I have to wait 20 working days for the money to be available to draw on, but I have also found that going into the branch in Spain and asking for it to be made available early works. The extra 2 or 3 cents on the rate more than makes up for the tiny commission they take.
