I'll start with one of my favourite bands, one who I would not have lifted a willy to help if they were on fire in the early 80s, The Opposition.
Talk Talk.
Initially written off as being Duran Duran wannabes but evolved into a majestic band who did their own thing by the time they released Spirit of Eden were a world apart.
Dismissed as Roxy Music soundalikees, David Sylvian now regarded as an auteur of the highest order. Listen, weep and die track pasted first

Just given Quiet Life a listen, haven't heard that for a while, great track.
Better than anything by Roxy Music, IMO of course.
Absolutely slated for being former Slik **** and rich chums, the singer went on to do rather well. This is a fabulous single.

Christ, if anyone invites me to step up and do my Howard Devoto impression anytime party soon, FFS shoot me in the fekkin head.
IMO Roxy are/were amazing. Ladytron, Is there something, brilliant albums in 79 and 80.
Sylvian and the rest idolised Roxy Music, Lou Reed and Bowie, their influences.
I have never been a fan, but I had that Japan single in the 80s
