Never seen a minute of BOB (as us non-Band of Brothers fans like to refer to it)and while I'm sure it's just peachy, whiney-voiced David Schwimmer convincing in an army uniform - you gotta be shittin' me Private Pyle?!?! Well?

Thats part of the story - Schwimmers character is an utter BUFFOON who has been promoted way above his capabilities. He's a walking disaster, and a very convincing one.

tis definately the best television series made in recent times.

The book's just as good too. I also liked Stephen Ambrose's other book, Pegasus Bridge.

Schwimmer is only in the first episode (or is it the first 2) - agree absolutely fantastic. PS bought DVD of soldiers and sinners set around battle of the bulge - anyone seen it ? any good ? did not remember it coming out at the cinema - but was only £1 car boot job.

Doesn't he turn up later on when they are actually fighting in Europe?

Damien Lewis is superb as Captain Winters and its hard to believe he is not a genuine septic. the acting and the effects are superb. Some of the winter fighting in 1944 in the Ardennes Forest is gruesome but in context.

simply brilliant

Schwimmer's character is portrayed very close to the character in the book, which was written from interviews with people that were actually there. Fantastic book, fantastic series.

WWII in colour is also very real. There is another on the History Channel, I forget what its called, its kind of like home movies of the time. You can see peoples fear and you hitler youth kids not enjoying what there are being asked to do. I found that doco quite moving.

There is also a WWI in colour doco on the HC which is quite 'good'.

The Spielberg and Tom Hanks factors have put me off this despite such rave reviews.

I have been enjoying HBO's Generation Kill though, set during the early stages of the latest Iraq war.

Apparently it's coming to Channel 4 next month if anyone's interested although obviously advert breaks AND having to wait a week between episodes make buying or renting the DVD box set a better option. Unless you wanted to ILLEGALLY download it which I'm not advocating but I'm sure you could do if you were that sort of PIRATE...

I'd normally agree with you but what actually tempers their influence is the fact it was based on a true story and those who actually took part and were still alive at the time of filming had a good deal of influence on the final product meaning the sickly sweet sentimentality and the need for a Hollywood style ending found in Saving Private Ryan is missing from this series.
