Because we are taking points off top teams, therefore weakening their position.

Whilst all games matter, the key games are against your main rival. See the phrase '6 pointer'.

I disagree. Don't lose to your rivals. Absolutely yes!
But failing to take the points at home to the weaker teams is far more damaging, than remaining in an even position to your main rivals. IMO

Rubbish.
If we had deprived Burnley of points we would have gone up, the fact we drew twice affected our points total, see matches vs Derby and Sheff Wed.

Sorry but the fact they did no better is irrelevant, we have to win the mini league as we end up on the same points.

This is complete clap trap. You could cherry-pick us an extra point from ANYWHERE and we'd have gone up. So how exactly does quoting Burnley, Derby or Sheff Wed (when as discussed, only 1 top six team took more points from us than the other way round) prove your point?

Don't get me wrong sloppy points are as bad, but in reality all the final top 6, will have dropped points at the end.

Boro had the best head to head record, followed by Burnley. If we had beaten either of them, we'd have done it.....

But yes, all important, just potentially a greater swing in some games.

Sorry, but If you cannot see beating your rivals and effectively having potentially a 6 point swing has a big impact, than relying on everyone dropping points, then this discussion is pointless.

But equally we would have been up if any of these results had come in.
Home Draw Wolves
Home Draw Ipswich
Home Win Preston
Home Win Cardiff
Away Draw Rotherham
Away Win Wolves (against 10 men)
Away Draw Cardiff
Away Win Bolton

I hear what you're saying - Because equally we should have beaten Burnley at Home and Derby away. Those were just as much missed opportunities as any of the above.

It's just that as a strategy to improve on last year, I would suggest guaranteeing wins at Home against lesser opposition is a must.

Beaten ten man Wolves away

Well obviously I can see that. But this pointless discussion was initiated when you said:

But we didn't take enough points from the top teams that was the bigger problem.

And that simply isn't true. Any single extra point from anywhere would have done the job. And anyway, we were actually bitterly unlucky not to beat Burnley at home and Derby away. You make it sound like we weren't actually competitive in that top 6 mini-league.

I think your point would be well made if we had finished where we did but given away more points to 3 or 4 of the other top 6 clubs than we took off them.

I can't argue that any of those would have done, but how about everyone is equal and it comes down to the teams at the top?

Never since the 1870's has a team won every game. There will be points won, drawn and lost through sloppy play, moments of brilliance, refereeing incompetence.

Every time you play a top team you have the opportunity of opening a gap, as it is 'head to head'. By drawing all of them other than Boro and Hull, we simply did not help chances.

I hear what your saying but we're going to have to agree to disagree [emoji4]

Sorry but for me it was. Drawing 4/6 is not good enough. As per my earlier point, I agree any point would have done, but we need to do better in the top 6 mini league.

The whole discussion arose due to our inability to take our chances against top teams.

So........
has he been given the goal then, or what?

Everywhere I've looked it's still down as an OG

Oh good. Any chance SB can contact Albion PR and have his official job title changed from 'striker' to 'assister' then?

I'm gonna guess his official job title is 'footballer'

Calderon scores with his face and we all love him and sing about it. Balock deflects one in off his face and he's a knob from claiming the goal?!?

Baldock's goal scoring clearly isn't great but anyone can see we are a poorer side when he's not in it. Hemed last season always played better with him there. Why? Because his running and movement created him space. In an idea world he would also bang in the goals but lets face it goalscorers are hard to come by. Luckily we have a manager who looks at more than the goalscoring chart when selecting his side.

Any chance of putting together the results for the games where we played teams who were in the top 6 at the time (seemed like almost every game was against a top 6 side all season) Maybe the extra points we took of them meant they missed out on a top 6 finish and why our win rate against the final top 6 wasn't as good as it might have been

Fair point. But it's the end of the season that matters, not the start.
