We are considering all sorts of options for where to go next year to teach English. Baku pays well but we wondered what living there would be like!

Yeap I've been there too watching England. Weather can go from bloody hot to f*cking freezing in a matter of hours so take your shorts and ski coat unlike I did.

I'd quite enjoy living there, I think - although avoiding the oil money nouveau riche and the ex-pats chasing a cut of said oil money might get a little irritating. Generally, the people I met were great (but don't mention Armenia). Living there would provide a fantastic base for travelling all over the region - Armenia and (especially) Georgia are well worth visiting, as is northern Iran, of course, and the north of Azerbaijan itself). An added bonus for me would be the opportunity to spend long lazy days doing nothing other than smoking and drinking coffee while playing old guys at backgammon on rickety trestle tables on the pavement. Bliss.

Given up on Turkey then Russ?

Great place for going elsewhere and getting out of the city into the countryside you will see truly amazing views of nature. People are lovely and food is great but corrupt is not a big enough word to describe how thing get done there. If you live there fror any amount of time and expect even the standard south american style of bureacracy and right ness you will be quickly disillusioned..... society generally marches to Baba's tune... or gun.

Also if you are teaching..., if it's not an international organisaiton or a university take professional advice (e.g. British Council) befor signing. have heard stories of teachers not getting paid and contract not being worth the paper they're written on.

Hope that helps.
