Try and be a bit positive will you!!!!

Coming from a community college, i would NEVER be expected to get in to a uni top 40 let alone top 20!!!!

And I thought the UK was a classless society

I've gone to a community school for my entire seconday education. Due to our applications system, if I get the grades, I can get into ANY Irish university, evn the wankiest private ones (Griffith, DBS)

And the UK is meant to be the socialist country of the two....

In theory all UK universities award places strictly on merit. This theory however in reality is bollocks. If it was not, why do they even ask what school you are from?

Exeter University is the most white-middle class place I have ever seen, now don't go telling me that's an accident.

How we stopped that was by banning direct admissions. All applications to all universities that want even one cent from the state are handled by the state, based entirely on grades.

As we have no fees, cash isn't even a limitation.

Well, we have UCAS so admission are not done directly to institutions here either. In theory our system is set up very similar to yours (apart from fees) in that it SHOULD allow anyone to get anywhere on academic merit.

However at the end of the day it is of course still the institutions that decide who to give offers to and that is where the discrimination still occurs IMO.

Here, it is NOT the institution that decides the offers though. Its the CAO computer system. The college CANNOT refuse you if the CAO system gives you an offer.

erm, absolute DICKENS laura!!

I went to a community college and I am in a top 10 uni (Just!), and one of my mates from said community college has since graduated with 1st in Economics from Cambridge and is now doing a Masters at Oxford.

All the same, well done to you. Nottingham is VERY good.

he said nottingham was a good university, just not 'elite' as some people on here would like us believe which is true.

As an example of our system - my community school is the 40th highest school in the country for university admissions - and the 6th highest non-private school.

Its a vocational, secular, county council owned school, which is terribly underfunded.

i think the point laura was trying to make is that almost to a man everyone was pleased for her, but as usual, Richie has to turn the thread into a..." I know best" - richie blowing his trumpet again.

I personally dont give a *** what anyone thinks about how good or bad a particular university is, Laura will hopefully be the first Wilcock to ever go to an University and I am as proud as any father that she is clever enough and that she has shown by her GSCE results and hopefully her hard work and dedication to her A levels that she will get in to Notts and make something better of her life that the past generations of my family ( including me) have done.

You could also say Yorkie chose to turn this thread into a 'my daughter is wonderful' thread but you won't because people on here are allowed to criticise Richie but not Yorkie.

am I RIGHT or am I RIGHT?!

Also, to be fair, I said exactly the same things as Richie but you didn't have a go at me. Why's that?

Don't get me wrong, Richie talks absolute garbage most of the time on here but it seems harsh to have a go at him here. He did say 'Nottingham is a superb uni' and 'Nottm is a good uni no question'.

How much more positive do you want him to be?!

And RIGHT you are to be proud of young LAURA.

Just so long as she doesn't stop dropping into NSP from time to time to shout

then it's all good.

P.S. DAVE, do you work near Bishopsgate in London? If so then I think I SAW you on Friday November 5th. I was on my way to NORWICH and had a bit of a wait at Liverpool Street so went for a little WALK.

Thank you. A defence coming from a rather unlikely source.

I have said nothing derogotory to BAG and said about Nottingham is a very good uni indeed.

In fact, all I HAVE done is slightly question what Yorkie said about it and what she implied by posting  about her daughter not being offered a place at Cambridge.

I do not know best and have not said anywhere on this thread that I do.

Obviously it ok to have a pop at me thought because I am an easy target.

Well done BAG. Nottingham is a great place and you will love it there. Plenty of top shops and bars galore. Watch out for Ocean on a Saturday night and try The Bomb and Rescue Rooms...both very cool places.
