Meopham, Kent.
Fancy a Swedish research team coming up with a health risk association for Denmarks top export. Tch, it's as if they don't like each other.

19% increase risk. the relativly liklihood of this cancer is bugger all. 19% incease of bugger all, is still bugger all.

Exactly, but saying that it increases your risk by 19% makes a far better story than saying that it increases your risk from 0.012 in 1 to 0.015 in 1.

Nope, BBC news website today. Some scandanavian medical research. I would forward the link but I'm too busy finishing off my friday bacon butty

The Swedes? I wouldn't trust anything they'd researched - after all its their fault we're all driving around in cars that are too big on the outside, too small on the inside, and have lights on in the middle of the day!

One point that the Today programme reported this morning which the Mail did not is that obesity has previously been shown to cause a more significant increase in the occurrence of what is, even then, a very rare cancer. This report effectively treats "obesity" and "eating more than 50g of processed meat a day" as completely separate things, which is ridiculous.

This study, as I understand it, looked at more than 6,000 people who already had pancreatic cancer. Therefore a significantly higher number of them will have been obese in the first place than would be the case in the general, "healthy" population, and if you're obese, it's a fair bet that you eat more of all sorts of things than someone who isn't. There were probably any number of things that they could have zeroed in on. The cynic in me can't help thinking that meat gets more headlines and so helps to guarantee their funding.

Never lets me down the good old trusty Mail.

No doubt my Dad will be ringing me this weekend to inform me of this latest health development.

I wonder if the press will publish the whole study, along with peer reviews of the science contained within, supporting evidence, sample size and a meta-analysis of other similar research.

I won't wonder that for too long tho :)

the salt and fat will get you first.
Pancreatic cancer is the 5th most common cancer death. Patrick Swayze must have been very unlucky I guess.

I always heed the American saying "Consider the source", of course people have vested interests, but all the "wine is good for you" I believe has recently been debunked. Doesn't matter to me either way, I don't really drink anything any more - having done about 5 years of at least a bottle of red every night. Far too simplistic to claim that French drinking wine is responsible for a healthier life (even if that's true), they tend to eat better, fresher food anyway - just look at their markets.

Agreed. As I said everything in moderation...

yes, very unlucky indeed. suffering from cancer is unlucky in the first place, 500 in 100000 diagnosed in the UK a year, 2.5% of those are the pancreas, though apparently a very high death rate.
