I do like that part of the world. Saturday, we took in Harrogate v Accrington - which was the most turgid game of football I've seen in ages - before driving another hour up the road to Durham. Dumped our bags and walked into town.

That’s dedication to the game. My Saturday in Newcastle consisted of a trip on the Metro to Whitley Bay, followed by a pleasant walk along the coast (cliffs and sandy bays) through Cullercoats to Tynemouth which is well-positioned,with a lovely wide main street leading to a ruined castle. I continued my walk along to North Shields, taking a quick cruise across the Tyne to the southerly version of the eponymous Shield. Made my way back to Newcastle on the Metro through Jarrow and Gateshead.

Those who took in a game missed a trick not going to Darlington. My non league side Brackley were 2-0 down and won 4-2. As it happens Connor hall was playing who is lewis hall’s brother.

There is something about the Geordies you just have to admire.
You will never meet a more friendly and fun loving people.
We were up there for three nights. Must have been told to enjoy our weekend dozens of times. Even the hen night girls who were absolutely smashed apologised and told us where to avoid their puke! Real class!
Fantastic trip. Best away trip in the Premier League.

I note Leamington v Brackley is on Easter Monday. I'm sure me and the lad will see you there if you are planning on going.

The fans do make themselves very hard to dislike. But given their apparent acceptance , enthusiatic welcome even, for the Saudi murderer's ownership, I will carry on doing my best.

Also, Shearer.

That feels pretty likely to me. It is not impossible we could be a win away from winning the title by then. I can’t see it though. Fully expect to lose in the play offs for about the 7th year in 8 or something like that. Looking forward to Gaz Dean and Jack Edwards having their usual scrap during the match. Hard to believe they are good mates off the pitch by love the fight on it.

My last trip up there was the 4-0 defeat under De Zerbi. This was my third visit and first win.

I really want to dislike their club because of the sportswashing, and there is a lot you can easily hate about them. Smug Eddie. The fake tanned attention seeker Tindall. Joelinton, the massive snide. Bruno Guimares: gum chewing, whiney cheat. Burn, these days. Obviously the Saudi thing. The gamesmanship. And the atmosphere at their games is wildly overhyped: they're no different to anybody else when they're not playing well. Gordon's Princess Diana haircut.

But! SJP is my favourite PL ground. Towers over the place like a cathedral and there's no city like it anywhere in football. A one club town where the whole place is buzzing on a match day. And much as I really want to hate their fans for the Saudi thing, every single one I met today was just lovely. After the game, I didn't hear a single person having a dig or suggesting we were lucky, which is normally the routine for Big Club fans when they find themselves losing to little old us. As we walked back into the city centre to get some food, we must have had at least a dozen of them approaching us to say well done, or they hoped we'd go on and win the cup. One of them wanted to shake our hands: another wanted to say how much he admired the way our club goes about things. Every one of them wished us a safe journey home, which sounds all the better in the lovely Geordie accent.

I really want to loathe their club, but I can't bring myself to feel the same about their fans. Proper football people.
Great post, love the city and love the ground. Stay up for the weekend usually every year. On the beers at Dunston UTS v Emley (£2.50 a pint if you wondered) and Gateshead v Fylde and then a curry, drinking long into the night. Just a cracking away day all round.
