so was watching this video just now, and Carpenter scores 2 free kicks away at Colchester- one at each end

with Brighton fans behind each goal

what's going on there then?

if it's the match I remember Albion fans stood and one end, and sat at the other (sharing the stand with the Col U fans - no segragation)

And they say that we can't score from set ball situations? . . . I had forgotten how many Chippy used to score from free kicks.

Richard Carpenter was a superb all round midfielder. Tough, read the game well, a fine passer and as seen in the video "chipped" in with a good amount of goals

he's genuinely one of the best midfielders I've seen at the club

Chippy's second at Colchester, I'm assuming he's just blasted it hoping it touches someone on the way in as it's indirect? Can't spot who it touched though!

Agree, He was a talisman for 4/5 seasons. A big part of our success.

yeh it must have taken a touch off someone on the way through. I actually think this is the best option in that situation. There is usually 11 defenders in your way so if you hit it hard enough there's a decent chance it'll take a touch and go in

it was and I seem to recall that those Albion fans that were seated gained entry at the standing end and were then escorted in small groups to the other end where the seats were. Not quite PL!

Zamora was out (suspended?) and the home fans were continuously singing "you're just a one man team"... until we got the first.

Edit - no Zamora was out injured after coming off in the previous game at home to Notts County, where he was replaced by Robbie Pethick.

Where's the other video, where the ball goes into the wall or the car park - which is our usual standard.

Was at that game (in the terraced area to the right from the camera angle), I believe the allocated seating at Layer Road for away fans was half that stand to the left. Still can't get over that the one in front of us was allowed to stand, clearly never took any touch from anyone else.
Notters "4-1, to the one man team" :lolol:

I was there. Away end was standing. The opposite end was home fans’ seating, but was heavily infiltrated that day by Albion fans. I’m sure that we got our tickets through a neutral who lived in Colchester.

I was there as well. I couldn't get tickets for the away end, so brought tickets for the home end, wore colours and said to the steward that they had sent the wrong tickets to me, so he let me in the standing away end!

We were singing “3-0 to the One Man Team”, I seem to remember that BZ was in the main stand and quite enjoyed the chant. Wayne Gray made his debut on loan to us, from Wimbledon(?) as a replacement for Bobby while he overcame his injury.

Was also the first time we met Lord and Lady Bracknell, with whom we became very good friends.

Was the Carpenter free kick actually direct?

I remember for a few years free kicks could be moved forward 10 yards when the opposition committed dissent - a great rule!

This led to the peculiar scenario of having a direct free kick inside the box. We definitely scored one from at Withdean.

Yes, you're correct. Just saw his free kick on Albion YouTube channel. Direct free kick from within the penalty box
