No particularly amusing stories of avoiding people though this thread does remind of this (strong language/not for playing out loud at work!):

Did you know that there is a neurological condition called prosopagnosia (face blindness) which affects a persons ability to recognise faces? I am pretty sure I have this as have exactly the same problem you are describing with recognising people! https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/face-blindness/

Apparently there are an estimated 1.2 million people with prosopagnosia in the UK and even a charity that is set up to support people with the condition: http://faceblind.org.uk/

Interestingly there are also 'super recognisers', people that have a significantly higher than average ability to recognise faces. I have a friend who is like this, he can spot people that we went to school with 35 years ago in a crowd of people! When we were younger he would start chatting to someone that we both knew in the past and could never understand why I was standing there absolutely oblivious as to who they were!
Face from 30 years ago I can remember …. The name of someone I’ve just be introduced to …. Nope not happening.

So I took the test and got 60% right- which indicates i am possibly face blind-however by the end i was literally just guessing as i couldn't recognise the faces at all, so realistically my score is probably lower

I’m not sure that I avoid people I know. I’ll usually stop and take time to at least say Hi.

I meet a lot of people I don’t remember from various situations but I’ll still say hello.

People I don’t know? I have enough friends. I don’t need anymore. I think I’m fairly pleasant to people I don’t know but I’ll avoid people if I can, outside of work situations.

I’m not a massive “people person” and I avoid crowds when I can.

I’m in my 40’s and I think most people by that age have all the people around them that they want.

Like most of us, I’ll “switch on” when I have to. Work or certain social situations. But I’m at the point where if I have a choice and I don’t want to be around people I don’t know, I’ll give myself a break and not engage.

I think most people are good people but I’m not really up for getting to know anyone new at this point.

I’m similar. I recognise faces but am terrible at remembering names. I’ve had some awkward conversations with people I recognise whilst agonising inside trying to remember their name.
I am terrible with that. Especially as I played cricket for years and golf now, and have met loads of people who when I meet them, if I am with karen, I really have no idea what that their names are and end up not introducing her……

I did that once with Norman cook( FBS). I had met him a few times at the Albion and Brighton marathon etc….we met in M&S and were chatting about the Albion and he said “ is that your wife” and I said, yes, Karen this is………. And I went totally blank. He said hi, I’m Norman to her and I just wanted the ground to open up and swallow me!

I just did that and got 38%!

EDIT: And @nickbrighton that was with a lot of guesswork. Once it got past Bart Simpson I hadn't a clue.

I was up at the Princess Royal hospital yesterday lunchtime for a tiredness bug that I haven't been able to shake off for about a week now.

The A&E department was chock-a-block with about 40 people in front of me, all looking pretty ill. Now one thing immediately struck me as I grabbed a seat between a couple of girls in their twenties and an elderly sick man with his wife looking after him. There was not one black or Asian face waiting. Amazing that, isn't it? I guess they never get ill. Or is it that their practice gives them preferential treatment for new/foreign people moving to or living in Haywards Heath and the surrounding areas? I do not know but I am very curious of that. One of the girls near me had what sounded like whooping cough (caught from her young child she mentioned) - normally I would run a mile with something like that but as I was so tired, I asked her to give me a nod if I was asleep when my name was called. Fortunately I grabbed half an hour before triage but was awake when called. Then the never ending wait after for treatment. The service was excellent despite waiting nearly five hours in total. Not bad.

And the one thing that actually made me feel quite proud really - everybody was kind and considerate to each other - most were wearing a poppy (not that it's a big thing) and everyone was speaking the same language. It was like going back 25 years in time and it was bloody nice despite feeling absolutely dreadful.

No doubt I'll be attacked for my right-wing views and probably called a racist bellend but I imagine A&E departments up and down the country are in a similar state that if you're white, it's not alright.......
In this case I would contend that “right-wing views” is a touch euphemistic, and “racist bellend?” Well yes, that fits rather well.

I’m puzzled as to what would cause you to post this lunacy in this thread, unless your unfortunate thinking process arrived at “they all look the same” trope of racism fame? Quite likely imo.

I'll be honest now, my first thought upon going into an A+E waiting room isnt 'jeez, how many ethnic minorities are here? Let me count them' because they're just people, who are exactly the same as me, only with a bit more melanin in their skin.

Oh, there's none here! Now is that a statistical anomaly, considering Haywards Heath is a central sussex town thats overwhelmingly white (90% according to this page https://citypopulation.de/en/uk/southeastengland/west_sussex/E63006170__haywards_heath/ ) OR is it a massive conspiracy thats against you?

Must be the conspiracy.
You will make of this whatever you choose , I will give you facts and you can decide if whether or not your left or right tendencies play a role .

In the last 3 years I have nose dived health wise , i worked on the building all my life always hands on , i`ve had ops on both hands for carpel tunnel and a knee job . 18 months ago the annoying pains that most of us have in that line of work stopped being a bloody nuisance and became a lot worse very very quickly . I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis throughout my body ( common enough ) but it had taken a particular liking to my spine . Long story short i am waiting for an op on my neck (either removal of a disc or a plate put in ) I have to see the surgeon to find out what he suggests is the best option .

3 years ago I saw my doctor within 3 days max , sometimes the same day , given the other long standing health issues I have (some serious , not prepared to get into on this thread ) i now cannot get an appointment within 2 weeks ( last 2 were 14 &16 days ) . However the area that I live has had a recent influx of foreigners , and i can already hear those that have stayed this far salivating at their - told you so`s , and right wing this , and racist that . Well your wrong ( although that wont count I`m sure) . But in a small community you do notice when the waiting room that was predominantly British is now outnumbered most days .

Now you can call that racist if it makes you feel happy , or you can call it an open and honest observation , personally I don`t give a f*** because those that have set minds wont be swayed no matter how much proof there is .

How do you know what nationality the people in the waiting room are?

A far more considered post than the previous poster’s “Refreshing to see no blacks in the waiting room” approach.

Certainly no doubt that GP’s workload has increased. I imagine for different reasons in different areas.

Tiny details such as most speak hardly any English , and i have lived here 42 f****** years and they weren`t here 3 years ago . As for specific nationalities -that is hardly the point , although you will certainly try to justify your stance instead of see that sometimes FACTS ARE FACTS no matter how much you don`t want them to be .

Are you 2 on a tag team?
Durlston's saying there are no 'non white' people in A&E when he went there for a cough (no mention of whether he tried to make a GP appt or not) & has assumed there must be a secret vip lane for 'non white' people who aren't wearing poppies at the GP surgery, so they don't have to go to A&E.
TugWilson is saying that the GP waiting room is full of 'foreigners'.
So that means that Durlston must be right as TugWilson has witnessed the GP vip lane.
My body is a temple, I don't drink, vape, I sort of eat healthily & walk at least 5 miles day. I reckon if I called my GP at the same time as my 'foreign' friends for an appt there would be no difference in wait times. As I lied about drinking & vaping, I'm more likely to need an appt than they are (although I do walk more than them).
At the surgery closest to me the most popular Dr doesn't look 'white or British'. He's definitely not white, I don't know where he was born but he's been a Dr for over 40 years here & he's very highly rated.
I don't use that surgery as there's never any appointments & where I live is not full of 'foreigners'. I stay with the same surgery I've been with for years even though it's further away, because there are more Dr's there & I'm more likely to get an appointment. I don't think there's an influx of 'foreigners' at my surgery either to take the wait time from a week to 2. There are simply not enough Dr's & we're getting older & needing to see the GP more. No I'm not saying that either of you are being racist but there maybe another explanation for your perceptions. 🤷‍♀️

You said that the waiting room that was predominantly British is now outnumbered, so for me it was interesting to know how you would know their nationality! My GP surgery has also been in decline in terms of availability of appointments, it was different 3 years ago (pre covid) you used to be able to get in on the same day but now its a nightmare with everything done online, and a lot of time they just try to get away with sending you to the pharmacy or giving you a call. My wife contacted them on Monday with something urgent but wont be seen until tomorrow. This all seems to have happened since COVID and I suspect that the pandemic has been the primary cause. Ive not noticed a change in demographics in my waiting room, although it wouldn't be something I would be looking out for to be honest, to me it's just people waiting quietly for the doctor!

If you cant get a GP appointment for a while, and your first thought is 'it must be the foreigners' and not 'why are the NHS so criminally underfunded', then i'd suggest you look at your immediate reaction.

And you two really need to be more co-ordinated - one of you has no black faces in the surgery and the other has tons of them! Either way you've managed to finagle a way of feeling like you're being oppressed by the foreigners, when the truth is you've been underfunded by governments more fussed by private enterprise than healthcare.
