Actually all unclassified roads have a "C" number I believe. Lord Bracknell would probably be able to tell us more.

'C' roads are given their numbers by the local Highway Authority (in the case of this C7 - Newhaven to Lewes - East Sussex County Council).

There will be other C7s in other counties.

It's rare for C roads to be widely referred to by their numbers. The C7 is an exception because it only got this designation when it was downgraded from its previous classification (A275), which happened when ESCC decided to encourage Newhaven to Lewes traffic to travel by the newly designated A26 route (Denton to Beddingham), rather than the route on the western side of the River Ouse. The change in road numbering was, on this occasion, noticed by local residents.

Maps of the C road system aren't readily available. When I worked at ESCC, I had one on my wall. Beneath C roads in the hierarchy, you'll find UC ('unclassified') roads, each with a number allocated to them by the local Highway Authority.

Only M, A and B roads get mentioned on physical road signs.
