Jeez - this government is SO inept.

Anyway, as we’ve now discovered that we can’t discriminate in favour of France, how are we allowed to discriminate in favour of Ireland? And if we’re not allowed to, then presumably if we want to impose quarantine, then we need to stop people crossing the border between the South and North of Ireland

We have the Common Travel Area with Ireland / Isle of Man / Chanel Islands which was in existence before the EU, and is still valid.

This is why Ireland is a different case.

Yes - you are probably right on that. It would obviously be a catastrophe to put any sort of controls on the Irish border. But if they ARE going to police this, then presumably they will have to do SOME checks on people arriving from Ireland - otherwise anyone that wanted to go on holiday and avoid quarantine will just route themselves through Dublin. Or maybe they're just relying on people thinking that would be too much hassle?

I am completely baffled by this....just as we are supposed to be moving to the next Phase (with more freedoms, etc) the government will introduce something which means that effectively no-one can go on holiday outside the UK and Ireland. In other words, we can't visit any of the hundreds of countries which are LESS RISKY than the UK. Tbh, I had no intention of going anywhere until August at the earliest, but this seems daft. I could understand if they had introduced the measure in March. But June seems ridiculous. Perhaps I'm missing something....

President of Spain has announced they expect to allow international flights in possibly after 22nd June.

May be more restrictions for mainland - but the Balaerics & Canaries will likely have a ratified plan to kick in straight away from this date assuming they move to 'Green' alert by that point.

Still some cheapy flights to Ibiza in July which are tempting

Spain and Italy are very soon to open borders and airports without quarantine, Ryanair have announced that half their flights will resume, the Balearics are in discussions with some countries about allowing tourists in for July and August.

UK government and scientists (and the R O Ireland) are seemingly and belatedly making us prisoners of our own country this summer. In fairness, France aren’t yet opening borders too.

A step to far imho.

The Italian PM openly admits that there’s is a calculated gamble and that economy cannot sustain any more hard lockdown.
