Also it has, unlike a lot of comedy, aged really well. It's what, 30 years since the series started and as this thread has proved it's still funny today. A lot of classics from the 70s were all but unwatchable in the 2000s, and not just the more obvious racist/sexist ones. Monty Python's Flying Circus for example, has large sections which really aren't funny at all. (Although the good bits still are really good).I'm with @jcdenton08, Arthur Atkinson and entourage were the funniest thing on the show.
Caroline Ahern's "what did I say, Roy?" character was also quality. Ted and Ralph, Unlucky Alf, the fruit machine know-it-all, the bloke in the pub who's opinion changed with the slightest bit of pressure. Actually it was all absolute quality really.
That's not ageing. Even on first showing Python had lots of bits that didn't work. I suppose that's the nature of making experimental stuff.Monty Python's Flying Circus for example, has large sections which really aren't funny at all. (Although the good bits still are really good).
I saw The Higsons at Dingwalls in the early 80s. I thought they were great. Surprised me when I saw him on TV later. That reminds me, I bumped into and said hello to Charlie Higson in the bar before Only Fools musical at the Dome. There to see his mate Paul Whitehouse in the show I assume. Told him I loved the Fast Show and he was very gracious and polite.
Yes, we wondered why the van wasn't in it. I guess you're right, too big for the space backstage. It was brilliant, wasn’t it? Dragged myself out of bed for that one to take my elderly Mum who’s a big fan. We’d previously seen it in town with a mostly different cast (except Trigger, Whitehouse and Cassandra/Marlene).
Slight shame the van was cut though, and no idea why unless there’s no space for it backstage.
I'd add to that Jesse's Diets "This week I have been mostly eating...taramasalata". Not for me, Clive.Really? I thought "Hi, I'm Ed Winchester", and "You ain't seen me, right?" were easily the two worst things. Swiss Toni was great - but then appreciating Swiss Toni is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman ...
Ted and Ralph were amazing characters. Paul Whitehouse does poignancy incredibly well. These two scenes particularly:
Also Rowley Birkin
The writing and the performances are just sublime. Higson’s… “dead” is just magnificentThe vegetable drinking game with Ted and Ralph would easily be in the top 10 all time British comedy sketches.
It is simply magnificent
‘Channel Nine‘ was probably my least favourite sketch of the whole lot………I'd add to that Jesse's Diets "This week I have been mostly eating...taramasalata". Not for me, Clive.
However, the bulk of the show was brilliant and I bet there's hardly anyone who watched it back in the 90s who isn't still using a catchphrase or two in everyday life.
I still use "Scorchio!", "Black!", "Nice!", "Suits you, sir", "...which was nice"
