I think we have, fundamentally, a different outlook. In sport, I’d much rather try something, and fail, than not try at all. Not trying is dull. And not trying isn’t competitive....which is the whole point of sport in my mind.

So - playing one way = trying
Playing another way = not trying.

Really ? Is that it ?

Multiple consecutive defeats with no goals and no likelihood of one are even more demoralising-for players and supporters alike.

Seemed to work for half the season but don’t let those facts get in the way either. Not many were complaining then.

Are you inferring we were shit in the first half of the season, or that we played the same tactics in the second half?

I think you can boil a lot of sport down to trying something and not trying something.....yes.

You have to judge most teams in the context of the same team. You wouldn’t judge Brighton against Man United and say they’re a failure. Same with Newcastle. I also wouldn’t say 2nd place is a failure or a club like Newcastle. They have achieved their greatest success in the past 100 years with an attack minded approach.

My point remains you build teams from the back, it applies to Brighton and worked reasonably well under Hughton.

I think the problem is some people view survival as the be all and end all where as others want to enjoy watching football and are prepared for defeats provided we give it a go. Judging by some posts, it's like it has to be one or the other, ie you play boring and get a point or you attack and you lose. You can attack and win games just as you can be boring and get a lucky goal and win.

At the end of the day you aren't going to change anyone's mindset as to what they prioritise.

No the defensive tactics that were criticised, apparently worked for the first part of the season.

It just feels because we were so poor during February and March, a lot of supporters are writing the first part off IMO.

It's quite clear he wants more entertainment though.

Seemingly he'd rather go down trying, than shuffling off mustering barely a whimper.

We actually tried to win games in the first half, not always pretty, granted, but the second half was plain for anyone that has any footballing nuance about them to see that we were scared, rabbits in headlights, bus parking and making sure we didn't lose. Did you miss that bit?

Not writing it off but I do think we got away with quite a bit in the first half of the season but we did defend better for sure. Can’t think of too many games where we looked great elsewhere. Away, we were pretty much creating nothing all season, but at least at home we were more positive initially. Not sure why things changed to be honest but we went increasingly more defensive including at home. Could be that other teams just worked us out and forced us back, and when they did we had no answer to it (no ‘plan b’), due to a combination of personnel and tactics (not sure how much sits in each bit though - next season will be great hindsight if the squad isn’t materially different). Because we created so little, the players knew we were largely ****ed if we conceded....so confidence drained, heads dropped, and we tried EVEN HARDER not to concede in the next game....and so the downward spiral continued.

This. Thought we had 2 very different playing styles last season. Before and after Xmas.

It is interesting though, because we did change our formation with the ball, and that is when we lost our way.

The whole working us out thing could be valid as well, as seemingly we had little answer to high pressing teams. Even today when pressed we looked quite sloppy, see their second.
