[Albion] Atmosphere Marseille v Ajax

with regards to the acoustics, over the years I've been to a few games at the arena, (though usually against lesser clubs as it was on my flat mate's season ticket and he would go to the big games). my experience is that it depends where you sit. when I would sit 2nd tear halfway line, you could sometimes hear peoples non shouted conversations several rows behind you, typical library game (only time I've been to a quieter game was at Wimbledon when they were ground sharing with the with those people whom you've never seen in the Dam). however, when I've sat near the F Side (like I was last night) the noise is much louder. weird thing is, I used to live in Diemen when they played in de Meer, and you could hear them roar when they were playing from a few miles away. I don't think it's the fans, from my limited experience and zero knowledge of how sound works, I think it's the acoustics.

Pretty much the same, and reaffirmed the notion about beer in seats, definitely a no no after my Barbour got drenched last evening.

Marseille was unbelievable in their Stadium and I've never experienced anything like that in my 50 years of going to football to be honest.
Yesterday was basically a great day out with a decent atmosphere but as someone said, it's all about the acoustics really and with the high roof in the stadium the sound didn't really carry.

Agree with Bozza but the difference is at Marseille the chants are very orchestrated with people at the front on podiums facing the crowd with loud hailers. They also had numerous drums and were two up early doors!

This may well have been covered in other threads - apologies if so, I've not seen it - but what do those who went to Marseille and Ajax think about the respective atmospheres?

Marseille was amazing. Very possibly the best football atmosphere I've experienced.

In comparison, Ajax felt a bit flat. I really didn't hear the Ajax fans at all until something like the 75th-minute mark, and I know some Albion fans in home sections who said they couldn't hear the away section at all, and I know we were singing loudly for much of the game.

I do wonder if it's just weird stadium acoustics all round.

But, to be clear, I'm not trying to talk down the whole occasion, which was astounding in town before the game, the match itself and the post-match debrief with like-minded folk over drinks.

Ajax was the best football experience. Better fans (no dickheads experienced), no hooligan experience, lovely city, great people.

Brighton's a shithole, I wanna stay here.

Oh - I absolutely agree, taken as a whole, Amsterdam was significantly better than Marseille.

Marseille was amazing - atmosphere incredible, stadium incredible, weather beautiful, city fascinating. Of course yesterday was still brilliant, but definitely second best to Marseille (imho).
As regards the noise we made in the Johan Cruijff Arena, we were a small section in the corner, upper tier. I think most sets of fans would struggle to get much going.

Apparently marseille were a lot louder at Ajax but that's hardly surprising!!

The atmosphere last night was about 2/10 compared to Marseille being 10/10. As an overall day/night/experience though, yesterday was about 10/10 compared to Marseille being 2/10.

I visit the Netherlands many times but Assen as my daughter competed in the junior European cycling tour. I love the place and the people. Amsterdam is an amazing city and loved everything about yesterday. If a city can look pretty in the grey shitty weather it definitely has something going for it.

The Marseille experience was completely different, but not a place I would want to go again. Kettled around for our own safety. Atmosphere was something I have never experienced before and pleased I did.

That's true, but none of that made a jot of difference when Pedro was stepping up for that pen, the whistling and decibel level of the boos was absolutely deafening.

Albion support - (over the TV) sounded so quiet last night, brilliant in Marseille. I put it down to the Dutch or UEFA TV producers deliberately having no mic’s near our section? Was it the same number of tickets for both ties, the Albion section looked small.

Marseille supporters - would they have been so vocal at 0-1 and 0-2 down, against a team in control? Pedro’s penalty burst their balloon.

Our fans yesterday were poor. Not sure if there were too many people who didn’t go to Marseille went to Ajax instead as they didn’t have the arsehole. But it was a very minor downer on what was a 10/10 few days.

For me Marseille was on another level than anything I have ever experienced. The feel of danger in the air leading up to the escort to the ground and then the sheer volume of noise was something I have never experienced before. Even broom man was on another level . To be honest going on a European tour has excelled anythi I thought it would be and long may it continue
