p.s Had a girlfriend who saw Elvis live in concert ( circa 1972 )....can anyone else on NSC claim this?

In a tea-room in Stratford about 40 years ago We had Eileen Atkins sat at the next table.

While on the way home from work in Southampton, going through the ticket barrier at Southampton Station, the man behind me asked the ticket Inspector "Is this the London train?" I didn't need to turn round to know it was Tommy Cooper. But I did turn round to check, and it was, even though he wasn't wearing a fez.

And in a locksmiths in Southampton a few years ago I was being served when David Gower came in. The way he spoke to the lady behind the counter he struck me as an arrogant little twerp who expected everyone else to know who he was and give him extra special service..... but I may have got a false impression.

PS - My daughter served Graeme Souness in our local chip shop a few years ago. She didn't realise who it was until the owner told her.

If you're in Stratford in the summer season, it's almost impossible to avoid actors. If you're talking about 1973, it was a good year for the RSC - Eileen Atkins was Rosalind in AYLI with the aforementioned David Suchet playing Orlando (and Maureen Lipman as Celia). I remember getting Atkins and Suchet's autographs that year.

I was at a conference on Election day in 1997 where the then Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Revd David Sheppard, was one of the speakers - famous to me having been brought up in Sussex as Sussex and England opening bat, whom my father idolised. At the end of the day, he went round to everybody who was talking in small groups to say hello - as if I needed him to say "Hello, I'm David Sheppard". A nicer more genuine and humble person you could not hope to have met.

That was precisely what we saw! I can also remember seeing David Suchet in a Moliere play at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing, before he was famous, playing Sganarelle, the highly comic servant character in Dom Juan. I was doing A-Level French at the time. He was absolutely brilliant and I was not surprised when he started to do very well.
