Assertion: Farts don't smell on aeroplanes

I heard this on the radio this morning and I think its true. Can anyone shed any light on this weird phenomenon?

Contrary to a popular misconception, fart noise is not generated by the flapping of the butt cheeks. You can see proof of this in the close-up video footage of Carl Plant's fart on Mate-in-a-State .

I have tested this theory and can confirm farts DO smell on planes when you're in the air. FACT.

I think there is an element of truth in it. I think the reason is that the air in the cabin is replaced from top to bottom, i.e. it squirts out above your head and is sucked out somewhere down below your seat. Any noxious gasses are therefore drawn downwards without passing your nose.

Or, it could be that the stench of humanity all packed into such a small space, and with several tiny toilets that do not submerse the effluent until it is flushed - the smells are all so bad that one more fart won't make much difference.
