completely untrue , a did a stinker just before christmas on a flight and the fall out from it was awful

I have tested this theory and can confirm farts DO smell on planes when you're in the air. FACT.

I think there is an element of truth in it. I think the reason is that the air in the cabin is replaced from top to bottom, i.e. it squirts out above your head and is sucked out somewhere down below your seat. Any noxious gasses are therefore drawn downwards without passing your nose.

On a related topic I once shat myself at Durban airport, flying to Cape Town after the mother of all stomach upsets.

Or, it could be that the stench of humanity all packed into such a small space, and with several tiny toilets that do not submerse the effluent until it is flushed - the smells are all so bad that one more fart won't make much difference.
