As part of my new role at work, I get over to see the French division, probably a couple of times a month.

Anyway, work have offered to pay for some french lessons ( ooohhh errr missus) and I wondered if anyone had used Rosetta Stone for language courses and if so what are they like?

I may look at doing an evening class or two but if RS will suffice to give me some conversational French that would be great

Anyone used it?

totally this..... have done Rosetta, it is very good, but for basics. I learned lots of words, but without being able to form them so well into sentences or understading construction.

michel thomas method stars with a coupe of people with zero expereience (like you) on CD and you go through a load of conversation practice, each exercise builds on last and reinforces, you repeat back what you think is the answer..... its brilliant, effective and cheap, you can do it in the car.

The evening courses at Sussex Uni are pretty good. Not heard of the Michel Thomas chap, will have a look into him.

I know a chap who was held in custody for over 12 months on a drugs charge and after that spoke fluent French but don't recommend that as way of learning the language.

Seriously wife and I drove to Cyprus a few years back and on the trip was speaking to a soldier on the ferry who told us that he was sat in front of a computer on a langue learning course and after 4 weeks spoke Arabic like a native. So much so that they were looking into this method of teaching children French at schools in Wales at the age of 7 years old as opposed to the way we were taught it at school.

Can you not just shout, wave your arms and tell them we saved them in the war ?
