Ulloa is incredible is the air and his heading is Sheareresque. But his finishing with his feet is not great. His goal against Leeds was top class, obviously, but if you look at the Barnes goal reel you will see some very clever finishes. Or, you'll ignore them because they don't suit your agenda.

Mate you miss the point. Everyone looks good when it goes in the net. What you dont get from clips of him scoring is the countless chances he misses that he should be putting away with a blind fold on. The bloke needs 4 one on one chances before he even thinks of converting one, and that is just too wasteful. CMS has been the same.

This is true but to have a player that converts 3 out of 4 chances wont be cheap.

I think Barnes is excellent in the one up front, back to goal, role on the few occasions I've seen him play it. I could never understand why Gus persisted with CMS in that role when it was obvious Barnes was better. CMS may well come good in the support strikers role.

Unfortunately for Barnes we now have one of the championships, if not the best in that role, with Ulloa. But Ulloa will not play every game this season and Barnes is certainly a championship level backup. He also plays the wide midfielder role well, getting up and down the field and defending well. He can also play the second striker role. I think he does suffer from being flexible and doing a number of roles for us. (A player playing the exact same role week in week out is always going to get a better result).

The other problem is that he is not a 'flair' player and doesn't do the unexpected. However, 11 players doing the unexpected will not win a football game.

He is still young, still improving season upon season and is certainly good enough at this level in a number of positions.

Oh and what happened to his biggest supporter, Mr Burns ?

People really seem to have warped views of chances to goals scored expectations. Ulloa had five shots v burnley he scored one goal. He needed five shots to score one goal. And that's not counting the times he had the ball in a good position but didn't shoot, or the times he failed to get on the end of crosses. Why is he not being slaughtered? Because we like him.

(From a previous thread)

According to my records:

2011-12
Barnes
Shots 79
Goals 14
1 in 5.64

CMS
Shots 81
Goals 10
1 in 8.10

2012-13
Barnes
Shots 61
Goals 9
1 in 6.78

CMS
Shots 47
Goals 11
1 in 4.27

Overall
Barnes
Shots 140
Goals 23
1 in 6.09

CMS
Shots 128
Goals 21
1 in 6.10

And from last season when people were criticising his shot to goal ratio

No strike scores from all their shots. To expect someone in a championship to is completely ridiculous. If he did he'd have been snapped up long ago.

Re, yes. By a long way.

Definitely. Much better finisher than CMS. Also people always refers to the amount of chances Barnes misses, however I would argue he MAKES far more chances for himself than most strikers I see at our level, as his movement off the ball and positional sense is very, very good.

The last time he played upfront for a season, he DID. Brilliant.

Barnes is NOT a better finisher.

Ulloa finishing is impeccable.

Barnes missed around 12 easy chances v Newport by himself alone! If barnes thinks for more than two seconds he misses. He's only good at first time finishes.

Surely you are fishing.

No it's not. He misses some easy chances too.

On available stats (numbers not available for leeds) Ulloa has taken 15 shots to score 2 goals (plus however many shots for the one goal v leeds). Hardly impeccable. Or is Barnes's one goal for 5 shots also impeccable?

If this is the qualification for a natural finisher, what does that make CMS who scored 35 that season? But, of course, he isn't as good at finishing as Barnes. No one is.

oh dear.....

It means he played in a team that was all out attack, how many did he score against that seasons champions?

I'm going to say it. Barnes is an average Championship striker. He's old enough to be nearing his peak. Some on here would have you believe he is the new messiah. In fact, he is the second or third best striker at the club. On top of that, his petulance last season was shocking, although, hopefully, he is over that; he should be at his age!

Do you make it up as you go along? A lot on here appreciate his skills as a Championship striker. He is better than some other strikers we've had at this level but not as good as others. He isn't dire as a lot of other posters would have you believe. Using hyperbole just diminishes your opinions.

Nearing his peak!! What tosh. Most footballers aren't considered at their peak until there about 27/28. Barnes is only 23.

You can say it as many times as you like. It's still codswallop.
