He had an awful start to the second half, everyone near me was saying he should be subbed
There was the odd shout (literally) from the middle of the West to get him off. They didn't know what they were talking about either. He made the odd poor pass and the odd mistake in defence, but that's because he was having to do so much.

Probably working!
this season:

With Barnes starting W14 D9 L6 average points 1.76 (48%win, 21%loss)
Without Barnes starting W3 D2 L6 average points 1.00 (27%win, 55%loss)

includes cup games as 'points'

obviously not enough data to be statistically significant but good ammunition against the moaners
Interesting stats.
It's a shame he cost you 50 odd quid today though!!

Barnes plays where he is told so can't knock him for that. Personally I think he looks a different player and a threat when in his natural position next to CMS but when drops into midfield looks lost and awkward. Hardly surprising though as not natural position.

Two very good finishes today lets hope in coming games he finds himself up there a bit more

thought Barnes was poor today but he scored 2 great goals.i am not in the barnes slagging of camp, just saw it like that today.

I, on the other hand, thought he worked very hard, laid off some excellent passes, and thoroughly merited his place. Then again I'm not one of these people who automatically defaults to abusing Barnes for the sake of it. I judge him on his actual performances, not his reputation.

There will still be certain members of NSC who will still somehow find fault with Barnes today. Give it an hour or 2 for peeps to get home and watch the binfest begin!

Too be fair if you was at the game, you would have found it very easy to find fault with him today. He was abolsute shite but got two late goals. He played in one great ball which I think ended in Buckley close miss, other than that everything, absolutely attacking move that went through Barnes broke down. He should have set up Mackall-Smith for a second in the first half, but instead of playing in a one touch ball, as Buckley did for CMS first, he took five touches and lost the ball.

I think what could sum it up today, is if you see Poyet's and Tannos reaction when Barnes scored. They were roaring with laughter, because I think Barnes was about to be subbed, but he got two goals, but he was amazingly lucky to still be on the pitch. I dont think it would be unfair to say untilt he first goal, it was his worst performance of the season.

One note to add, there were so many people around me calling for him to be subbed and shouting out he's shit, well within his earshot.

Now I may be Barnes' biggest critic on here , but for fucks sake people, he's a Brighton player so support him at the game. Have your say on here after if you want to call him shit.

Thats sums it up quite nicely. He looked completely lost in the second half, before he was pushed further up

I am normally no fan of Barnes, but he was good today.

His final ball still lacks a bit but two very well taken goals make up for that.

I like him, always works hard puts the ball into good areas and can clearly score them too.. Don't see why some people hate him so much :shrugs:

In Gus's interview post match, he was indeed about to be subbed just before he scored his 2nd! Gus also said that Ashley was the only player at the club that can play the particular role that is required for our style of play! Read into that what you so wish!

For me, he has adapted to this division but he can be very frustrating at times... As long as he keeps scoring and we are getting us results that's all that matters!

He wears our colours so support the lad FFS!

I was one of the many around me that was calling for him to be subbed - he had an atrocious state to the 2nd half, and absolutely everything he touched went wrong. I'm glad he stayed on though as his two goals were absolute class. I'm not a big fan of his but I bloody wish he would give a bit more to the game - some of his challenges are so half-hearted I want to smack him.

He's still on my frustrating list, and shall remain there. I will also try and bite some of my remarks back during the game. Although having said that Poyet and Tanno knew he was having a shit game which is why Poyet called him over and told him what I believe was "do something magical, or your off". And the rest as they say is history.

I am delighted to hear your analysis of Ashley's game today because his 'actual' performance at Hull as in other games I have seen of late featured a lot of work, but too many times where the game passed him by, all sorts of petulance and too many opportunities where he could have played in team mates well placed for a goal attempt or better still a take a shot himself when he was the most advanced and the goal was opening up in front of him. The reluctance to shoot when a clear opening is there is strange, especially for a player with such a decent shot and a good eye for a goal. Unlike the groundswell on here who sniped at him for the sake of it I have given him the benefit of the doubt because he had been asked to play a different role to last season, but as a striker I don't understand the reluctance to shoot, unless Gus has planted a doubt in his mind. This week I finally posted an objective critique questioning why Ashley is inconsistent and whether he is finding the role (given to him by Gus) a challenge. However I am really delighted that he is back on the score sheet today and hope it gives him confidence to go on from here - I wouldn't bet against him matching his goal tally from last season. I hope he graces an Albion shirt for years to come because I think he has great potential to go on and he is well worth nuturing. I would certainly rather have him than his former strike partner who defected to the enemy.

Barnsey is a complete enigma. You either love him or hate him. Personally the former. It doesn't matter how badly he plays, he will score goals. I spoke to my bro post match who was there who said Barnsey was rubbish, but he has the strikers knack of scoring goals and that was just what he did. I noticed that the first time I saw him coming on as a sub.His contribution defensively is immense and if selected from the start, we nearly always win. Personally, I would always start with our no 9.His relationship with GP is interesting, because GP is mainly supportive as if AB is some kinda love child, but heck who cares.
Long may it continue.

Spot on Edna...worked his socks off for the team...all players make mistakes but thought he had a cracker today.

Ash has been one of our better players this season, people are to quick to judge him for what he does on the ball, but what he does off the ball is just fantastic!! he runs back and forth, for a striker he defends, today he headed 2 very dangerous balls into the box away, for the life of me i have no idea why our own fans are attacking him, we should be supporting ANYONE who puts on the blue and white stripes, he's a very key player to us and if anyone on here doesnt agree with that then you dont agree with gus, which means you dont agree with our philosophy which means your not supporting the club!! 2 goals today WELL DONE ASH!!!!!

YES agree with this, he is not a controlling midfielder (just look how Razak played in the first half), maybe confidence on the ball under pressure which he has to improve on or he really is not that skillfully blessed, BUT he scores goals when he is up front and has the space and time he needs and thanks for that!
We are always cursing him from the stands for his inconsistent play and then he confounds us with a great goal... difficult one to weigh up really. Lets support the man though and let Gus decide his future.
