If another club came in for him and offered peanuts to take away our top scorer, many on here would change their minds... He will probably never be a superstar but he will deffo become a top draw pro, and for that he should get more respect from our fans IMHO!

He has a raw attitude but an ability to find the onion bag... I'm not his biggest fan but I am coming round to the fact that he is giving his all for the cause!

Ashley Barnes was outstanding against Palace. His defensive work is absolutely superb and he is just a really good all rounder. He is more of a midfielder these days, but he reads the game so well and is so versatile, he should be one of the first names on the team sheet. And he has got bottle too. If anyone can't see how good he is by now, i suggest that they don't really understand the game of football.

I think Ashley Barnes is great. The abuse he gets angers me. He's scored more than CMS, does a great defensive job for the team, he's only 22 and only cost us £50k. Bargain!

I hope now we've strengthened our defence he may be given more license to get forward and look for goals rather than having to focus so much on defensive duties due to the weakness of our fullbacks.

He has learned a lot under Gus and is becoming a very good all round footballer, improving all the time. He was my MoM on Tuesday night at Smellhurst, overlapping very well with El-abd.

When Murray was taking the plaudits for top scorer (while getting called offside so many times because he worked hard to poach and goal-hang), then bogging off on the back of that - Barnes was just a couple of goals short of GM's count.

I don't suppose Gus will mind if people call him 'barn-door' or generally unspectacular, as long as he just bangs them in.
Oppositions don't appear to be thinking "we MUST man-mark Barnes", so if that's a feature of his low-profile it's like having a secret weapon on the teamsheet every week!

What the team needs now until the end of the season is consistency and that is what Barnes is giving at the moment. If playing him more as a midfielder is what Gus wants to do so be it.

Week after week we will be debating the Ashley Barnes "is he good enough, is he not good enough" thread. The problem i can see stems from his inability to perform at the same level week in week out. The last couple performances have been excellent IMO but the one prior to those have been inadequate and thats leads to a conflict of opinions about Ash. Ive been a knocker of Barnes this season purely on the performances ive seen from him at this level and i personally dont think he has shown anywhere near the quality required to perform consistantly in the championship.
However, having taken into account his age and experience so far, combined with a couple of promising performances of late im hopefull that Ash can turn this around. Of course he has ability, hes a pro, but i do think there is a mental side to his game that is hindering his progress.

I think by the end of the season we will know a lot more about him at this level. Im gonna remain on the fence for now.
