Barnes was fantastic tonight. Even with out the good he was my man of the match. Great control, vision and passing and a well taken penalty.

Good to hear. I hope he keep Vokes out of the team. He must have bottle to take those penalties.

I am a Barnes critic and still have doubts. I agree it was probably one of his best performances of the season, but to me he will be under pressure to stay in the squad once everyone is fit. Tonight the game changed when Gus made the subs and Vokes and especially Agdestin came on to start giving Palace problems on both sides of the pitch instead of just where Buckley was. It opened up spaces all over there defence and had that game had 10 more minutes we would have bagged all 3 points.

Great to see Barnes play better tonight and I hope it continues.

I'll put my hands up. I was one of Ash's harshest critics on here, and I still stand by a lot of what I said at the back end of 2011. But boy has he had a fantastic January. Looks like a different, entirely motivated and committed player. Very very very glad to be eating humble pie tonight (and this month).

This, a lot of what was said about barnes having a real bad time of it ladt couple of months in 2011 was quite true to the way he was playing, but his form is back.

Big Cuddly Pandas.

Did he cheat tonight or something? Palace fans laying into him on Facebook. Some very harsh words being said too (even from some Brighton 'fans'). Can't remember him doing anything wrong?

Maybe the idiots on here will stop getting on his back now!!!

MR BURNS: eat your damn words!

Thought he was fantastic, was strong on the ball, great holding up the ball as well he scored a great penalty under pressure.

Seem to remeber being shot down several times for my support of him in the past. *smug*:D

i think he deserves to be part of this squad at the mo,he's only 22 and can improve his all round game, nothing wrong with the goals to games ratio either, but playing at a higher level that will come down

didn't pay much for him, that pen last night was worth the transfer fee all on it's own

A Palace mate of mine (I know) said they thought Barnes made a meal of being assaulted by Zaha, who should have been sent off imo.

WHy? I take it you haven 't read my post earlier.

I don't recall being *Smug* when he was poor earlier in the season, or when he got sent off against Burnley. Judge him over a season, not when he suddenly has a few stormers in a row. And with regards eating my words, whatever comes of Ashley, my original thread was saying he's not good enough for Brighton, and at the time he was a striker. He no longer is a striker. Whether or not he maintains his position when everyone is fit, who knows. The fact Gus hasn't seemed inclined to offer him a new deal, and he is free to speak to any club at the moment, would suggest he won't, but good luck to him, the last few games has seen a massive improvment, but he was poor during our bad run (as we a lot of players) so its too early to be getting over excited just yet.

But as I said before, the boy can sure take a penatly!

So do I. I hope he gets a new contract and is a regular for the next 10 seasons, because that will mean he's doing the business, but somehow I think when everyone is fit, Ash will be back on the bench.

He does a great job covering the left back, but I can see this position being there much longer. We don't have such cover for the right back, and when Noone, LuaLua are fit, and with a left back who has pace in the side, I don't see that role being needed. Its almost as if Gus is scared to attack down both flanks, which suggests he is not happy with the defensive side of it, but with the two new loanees on board, unfortunately for AShley, I can see his role being turned into a more atttacking one, and if all three (4) wingers are fit, then I dont see a place for him.

As a striker, I think he is behind CMS, VoKes, Toby and Hoskins, and we let Hoskins out on loan (maybe a striker is coming in when the loan window opens)

I think he has improved game after game in January. But anyone would need time to adjust to the Championship, and I think he has. But I will say one thing, that penalty must have taken some real bottle. Can you imagine the binfest there would have been on here if he had missed the chance to equalise with that lot.

Even if Ashley scored 3 every game, invented the cure for cancer and then solved famine in Somalia he would be criticised.

Mindless criticism of any of our players is simply a reflection of the poster's own insecurities about their imperfections and the more fans we have the more it will happen.

Mind you Paynter did look sh*te.

I was thinking this on the way home - standing there over the ball, all those acne faces screaming at you to miss - 3,000 collective breaths being held in the Arthur Wait. Takes some ticker and no little skill to maintain composure and tuck it away. Well done Ash. Just imgine the bitchfight that would have erupted on here had he missed the chance to get out of that dump with at least a point.
