Ashley Barnes is all but ruled out of Tuesday's game against Notts County, after the striker twisted his ankle at Oldham on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was injured following an innocuous challenge at Boundary Park, and Albion boss Gus Poyet says his striker needs a 'miracle' to feature in the game.

He told seagulls.co.uk, "His ankle is swollen and we had a few tests yesterday, but we will also assess it again today. It's better to wait for the swelling to go down to diagnose it properly, so I'd say we need a miracle for him to be available on Tuesday."

Poyet has now issued a challenge to his fringe strikers to step up to the plate, given the fact that Chris Wood is flying to China on international duty with New Zealand following tomorrow night's game.

"With Chris also going away there will be opportunities for other players. Players like Fran Sandaza and Gary Hart have been waiting for their chance for a while and they need to be ready. You tell players their chance will come along, so it's up to them."

Wood will miss Saturday's game with Swindon Town so Poyet is tempted to use the loan system - which closes on Thursday - but insists he will not make any hasty decisions.

"Of course I'm tempted with the loan market but it has got to be the right person and the right player. It can't just be any striker or midfielder because I'm not going to panic and make a mistake by bringing someone in who will upset the atmosphere. If there is the perfect situation for a player we will probably do something."

Tommy Elphick is however back in training after missing out on Saturday's trip to Oldham due to mumps, while Jim McNulty (ankle) and Jamie Smith (foot) are the only two other injured players, as they continue their recovery from long-term injury.

Meanwhile, Glenn Murray missed out on the League One Player of the Year award at Sunday night's Football League Awards ceremony, which was won by Peterborough United's Craig Mackail-Smith.

Possible line-ups

Albion: (4-4-2) Ankergren; Calderon, Greer, El-Abd, Painter; Bennett, Bridcutt, Kishishev, Sparrow; Murray, Wood. Subs from: Brezovan (GK), Taricco, Elphick, Dunk, Cook, Baz, Battipiedi, Forster-Caskey, Dicker, Navarro, Hart, Sandaza, Agdestein.

Notts County: Team news to follow…

Albion Kit: Blue-and-white shirts; blue shorts; blue socks.

Is Hart really above Torby in the pecking order?

If he's all BUT ruled out, then surely that means he's definitely playing.

Isn't OGH on 199 (or maybe 299) starts for us? Would be nice if he could round the number.

Definitely, but only when everything is wrapped up promotion wise. Followed an elderly Golf just now with "OGH" in the numberplate.

I'd consider starting with Hart

Gives him his cel;ebratory start - can run around like a headless chicken for 45 minutes to little effect whist g;lenda knocks in a couple and the swap him at HT for Sandaza or another

Silly old bat
Wood is only away for one game which is Saturday. Start with OGH. he may not score but you can guarantee he'll wind up their defenders, get free kicks or corners which will give Benno a chance to score, then bring Sandanza on for the second half of the game.

SuperFran to start - he deserves a chance to show what he can do Shirley?

It would be a rather big kick in the swingers to the 'fringe' players to dip into the loan market just when the opportunity to shine they've been promised is upon them...

I'm actually quite encouraged by this headline.

I was concerned he would be out for weeks. This sounds pretty promising. *touch wood*
