We would be idiots to let him go in my opinion. If his behaviour doesn't change then he needs either a firmer hand from Gus (which I still don't think he's getting) or being sold on.

However, I also think he should stay on playing merits alone. He adds a differenmt variety of formation that other players struggle to replicate. If better players come in, Ashley will have to raise his game as would any other player. So far he's raised his game each time and only been held back by his disciplinary issues.

On the young prospect thing, I always look at 24/25 as young within football and although I don't see youth as an excuse for ignorance Greer, our Leader and Captain, has been sent off THREE times for off the ball incidents that were all moronic and he's in his 30's. Not a great example to the younger players in the squad...

at what point does he not become an 'young prospect'?

At 23 now, with 190 appearances under his belt, married with child and responsibilities, what has to happen to warrant ab growing up?

I wish i had the same amount of leeway when i was 'growing up'.

100% this.

Agree with this. Why would we give away a 23 year old championship player? unless his demands are unreasonable? It's just business sense.

We have already made one mistake in that area.

Muzza was a H U G E mistake. Barnes would NOT be. He is an average player at our level. Bye bye you petulant tw@t.

I agree GG has done some stupid things, but running after and tripping the ref!!? When we have almost zero strikers left in our squad!!? Ash is plenty old enough NOT to be considered young in football terms. Bye bye to him.

How old was Beckham when he was sent off vs the Argies? 23. You're right, no one matures past 23...
Hang on, at what point did I say 'no one matures past 23'?
Please find that quote.

My point is as a response to the opening comments on this thread that he'll be great when he grows up.

Mr Barnes has IMHO ticked all the clichéd 'growing up' boxes and has still been convicted of a foul that would be unheard of in under 10's.

So I'll ask the same question again:-

What has got to happen to warrant Barnes growing up?
I'm not saying he can't, but some indication of the possibility would be nice.

Kissing and pointing to the hand print tattoo seems very hollow, at the moment.

Running after and tripping the ref? you make it sound like a benny hill sketch. They happened to be in the same area of the pitch after the referee moved towards the area barnes was in as we tried to go on the attack, he didn't run after him. (Ashley Barnes referee trip red card | Mail Online)

I'm not saying it makes what he did ok, but you're making it sound worse than it was, which just makes you come across as someone who hates barnes and colours any comments you have on him as bitter remarks of someone who refuses to fairly assess him. What he did was bad, it was so bad that you don't need to overstate it by making him seem as if he chased the ref in a wild uncontrollable attempt to do him in.

I think Barnes deserves one more chance but he should immediately be transfer listed if he gets another red card in the next 12 months. We really need him to be more of an asset than a liability.

To be fair, Barnes chased the ref from the second the penalty claim (which there was no contact as usual on Barnes) was turned down, he did in fact jump up and chase the referee to almost the half way line on the opposite side of the pitch. I remember, because I remember my mate turning to me and saying he's going to get himself sent off. The referee then backed away, and 5 seconds later was on the deck.

As much as the club would be looking to cover CMS, Hoskins & Dobbie anyway, this week.

Mr Barnes must be coming in for some serious cursing as the search is getting tougher.

Indeed - and thoroughly merited too.

Not according to the video of the incident in that link I posted. Barnes was in their half, the ref was in ours. We tried to break, the ref moved into their half close to barnes, barnes tripped him. He may have chased him after the penalty claim, but the chase and the trip were two separate incidents.

No, having seen that there is a longer gap than I remembered, but the point is he chased the referee a good 40 or 50 yards, gave him a load of stick and the referee eventually continued play. A short while later he'd still not calmed himself down enough and tried to trip the referee. Blokes a liability.

I assume this is a complete fabrication; the referee was on his feet the whole time, he was never anywhere close to being "on the deck".

I'm sure in a few months time we will have people "remembering" Barnes had the referee on the ground in a Jim Breaks special hold.

I have - have I not - given a perfect example of someone doing something very petulant and "under 10s" at the age of 23.

He'll be given a contract extension , any more misdemeanours and he can be put on the transfer list.
