This is where DRS falls down, you've got video umpires who don't understand the technology. The ICC need to train specialist video umpires who can study the science behind stuff like snicko and hotspot. You can see from the soundwave that the noise wasn't a nick, it was more of a dull sound. There's always a sharp peak if a ball hits the edge, you have to imagine it would still exist at any volume. I've always suspected that if the balls gets close enough to the bat without hitting the air makes a noise. Someone should be testing all this stuff under laboratory conditions and then publish the findings.

Looking even worse now, they've just showed the replay and on the fame that coincides with the noise you can see clear air between bat and ball.

I actually think real time snicko is a bit flawed when used with a standard camera, the frame rate isn't high enough so you can get a noise in between frames. What happened to those high def shots you used to get? I haven't seen them for a few series now, I wonder if they couldn't be bothered to maintain the cameras, I think they were ridiculously expensive.

Nice to see a bit of fight at last...... Root's decision is certainly dodgy but that's cricket. However it really does not help when we have been largely blown away all series legitimately and now we start getting dodgy decisions.

Cracking quote by Boyc's referring to KP's suicidal running in getting off the mark........ " Cook better be in his starting blocks "

One thing the Aussie bowling attack have done really well collectively in every test so far is to tighten things up when they've leaked a few runs. When we've leaked a few runs our bowlers have panicked and gone searching for wickets by bowling short balls and they've been punished. The Aussies have just kept probing around off stump, cut off any boundaries and easy singles in the field and waited for our batsmen to make a mistake.

Did anyone just see that clip from 1996 with those huge cracks in the Perth pitch, this wicket looks like it could be going the same way.

That was an interesting over from Johnson: 10 runs and 3 balls that were so short that Peterson couldn't have reached if he was stood on a step ladder.

I don't think you can criticise KP for playing that shot, it sat up for him to hit it but it looks like he went a fraction early on it, probably as a result of the difference in pace between johnson and siddle
