Correct, one who is widely derided as not bothered and unfit to wear the shirt. The other a desperate selection which in retrospect has to probably be seen as a mistake.

Just about says it all

They should have sent Luke Wright out and told him it's a 20/20 match, he's been smashing it around the grounds for fun out here for the 2nd 20/20 season in a row and his knock last season of 117 off 60 balls is an Australian record.
After sitting through the horror show at the MCG I'm hoping my vist to the SCG will see us actually man up but I won't be holding my breath.

I wouldn't, despite there being talk of a green wicket, I think pitching up at the spin friendly SCG with a test debutant and Joe Root as our spinning options is something of a risk. All the talk is suggesting that even if Panesar is fit, they'll give Bortwick the nod.

Being top scorer in this series for England doesn't say much really. Would have been Stokes had he played more games. The point is that the top players in general didn't have the mental application needed. They've done it before against arguably better Australian teams so it's not talent. The fact that Carberry and Stokes (and Root although he didn't get as many runs) showed more application says it all.

2006/7

Runs

(All on ten innings)
Pietersen - 490 @ 54.44
Collingwood - 433 @48.11
Bell - 331 @ 33.10
Flintoff - 254 @ 28.22
Cook - 276 @ 27.60
Strauss - 247 @ 24.70

2012/13

(innings)

Pietersen (8) - 285 @ 35.62
Stokes (6) - 200 @ 33.33
Bell (8) - 217 @ 31.00
Carberry (8) 238 @ 29.75
Cook (8) - 232 @ 29.00
Root (8) - 192 @27.42

The last whitewash saw two respectable averages from Pietersen and Collingwood. Not much to crow about this time. Cook has improved though (thus far).

Over half Colly's runs were scored in one innings. Great innings mind you...

The shambles of this series has reminded me just how key an on song Trott is/was to this line up. We've got the players who can really twist the knife when we are on top but they tend to need runs on the board from 1,2 & 3. I'm not just talking about missing him in this series, he was off in the summer & towards the end of the NZ series this time last year. It would be a massive boost to this England side to have the old Trott back but I realise that isn't particuarly likely.

I do think that Pietersen applied himself much better in the 4th test - for all his talk that he wouldn't change. Carberry has become more withdrawn as the series has progressed after a promising start. As a batting unit they haven't been anything like good enough

Australia quite obviously had plans for most of the England batsmen which worked pretty well, about the only fairly unknown player was Carberry and as they only had him to work out, it took them the first 3 Tests. Easy to figure how to get one man out when you have the other 10 figured out.

It's weird that Carberry has played a lot of first class cricket and no-one figured out this round the wicket weakness.

Maybe the quality AND accuracy of the Convicts bowling has been his undoing ? Remember most county outfits will have one or two very good bowlers and once you have seen them off you can work the ball a bit. At international level, you don't get that luxury unless it's Lyon who can't believe his luck this tour. Besides Carberry has been getting out in all manner of ways, twice bowled leaving a ball and a couple of LBW's too. He adheres better than most but has not gone on.

Anyway, do you fancy the poisoned chalice of starting the Official 5th Test Thread ?

Just mentioned on SSN that if the Aussies are unchanged for this test, it will be only the 4th time in history a side has gone unchanged for an entire 5 match series.

Saw a stat recently that only 2 English batsmen had scored more than Mitchell Johnson in this series, sums it up really
