Top advice that, as he was probably thinking of doing just that until you pointed out the error of such a ploy.

I hope he follows it.

People with a grudge have long memories - and so best not to feed it was the point I was making. He may feel better having put his hands to his ears - but it will only encourage the boo-ers when the next opportunity surely arises.

I think we're over analysing his reaction.

I rate him though, does the job that Gus asks of him even if it means sacrificing his own personal glory to do it. Has a good goals per appearance ratio and is still learning the game.

I dont get why he polarises opinion at all. Is it a bit like not so much that he can do no right, more that his strike partners can do no wrong in some people's minds?

tbh lets face it they need no encouragement whatsoever and if it made him feel better then so be it...some people will never change no matter what a player does

This weekend I shall get a players name on the back of my shirt for the first time since Hart. Barnes 9 and I'll wear it proudly on show.

Sent by the power of Gus' tactical genius

Doesn't matter what he does. He could score one, and create one in a tight game against a top play-off contender, and some will still moan at him ...... as we're seeing.

The point gets reached where those who have criticised him, have done so for so long, they can't change their mind now, they've become too entrenched.

Gus loves Ashley more than any of us. Even when he substitutes three of (six) midfielders/forwards in a match, it's NEVER Barnes.

I wonder if it's a case of not hearing them, but being made aware of it by it being highlighted more recently.

Please vacate this thread before it enters the nsc triangle:moo:

You see - this was a perfectly reasonable thread, so nobody has any issue with it. I presume that doesn't get you the attention that you crave though, so now you want to turn this one into a little binfest too? Child.

Me too. Unfortunately we have too many fans who expect complete flair attacking football and can't appreciate his overall effort . I was appalled by some idiots in the North yesterday, berating Barnes until he scores a cracker. 2 minutes later they're on his back again, he then gets a cracking assist....but apparently he should still be on the bench!!! :thud:
Exactly. He wasn't great in the last home game before yesterday though, unless you count the two goals he scored and his overall performance.

So in the last 5 goals we've scored at home, he's scored 3 and got 1 assist, and people were still moaning. He obviously can't keep that form so when he fails to score against Pompey the idiots will be on his back again.

I will put my hand up and say I thought that Barnes rather than CMS should have been taken off yesterday, but I was proved to be 100% wrong as after the subs Barnes looked the best player on the pitch.

I just wanted to see the Vokes/CMS combination upfront, but Vokes/Barnes worked very well.

Anyway Poyet rates him and thats all that matters. I think people should remember what El-Abd was like in his younger days and look at how he has developed over the years. If the same happens with Barnes then we could have a player who could be knocking in the goals for us for a long time. Barnes is still learning and will make mistakes, but IMHO he does not hide in games and wants the ball. Last night be could easily have had a hat-trick and won us the game, but the keeper made 2 great saves from him.

Gus never seems to sub Barnes, that just seems to show how much Gus rates him and yet again Gus calls it right as Ash gets the equaliser and then sets up the second goal.

Last season up top we had Barnes and Murray, lets compare the two. Murray got 25 goals last season, Ash 20 goals. Murray leaves for a serious pay rise at Palace and look what return Crapstal get back for him, 6 goals and a serious attitude problem. Barnes stays and he has to adapt to a new role, he becomes virtually an ever present in that postion and is leading scorer, with double Murray's tally (pens still have to be scored and after last season, thank goodness Ash seems to be good at them) also outscoring a (record) £3.5M signing. Another £1M striker can't get in ahead of him and has to go on loan.

He also now has a different role with more defensive requirements than last season but at present still seems higher in the pecking order than more regular midfielders Vincelot, Sparrow, Vicente to name but three.

Ashley Barnes has had a superb season, not necessarily the best player on our books, but if there was an award for most improved player I can't think of too many other challenging him this season. Keep up the good work, son.

Good post and very convincing arguments.

Not that I needed convincing. :)
