Wish I could manage it now, would be a lot richer.

My other memory of that night was tumbling out onto Union Street to get back to my digs and a load of Aberdeen 'Wee Wifies', all dressed up to kill, also tumbling out of a Theatre where they had just seen the Chippendales strutting their stuff. Gots loads of lairy comments but wasn't in any condition to do anything about it. All after three pints of Heavy...

Haha! Aberdeen. Never been. A pilot friend of mine lived there for a time, transporting the rig workers around. He said getting the workers on board in some of the states they were in was a nightmare. Said some of them wouldn’t travel further than the nearest pub/Inn to the airfield.

Never been but I’ve always been interested in Aberdeen. It’s urban and economic history, relative wealth and decline is very interesting. And now Brewdog are based just outside. One day I’ll go.

No way I’d work the hours I do if I wasn’t doing shift work. Without O/T we work a 4 on 4 off shift pattern. Which means we only have to use four days annual leave to get twelve days off in a row. Most months I do overtime so tend to work 12-14 days in a row and then have 12 days off. For me, it’s a good way to work. Not for everyone, I appreciate that.

For what it’s worth my mate thought it was a dire place to live and couldn’t wait to get out. Might be nice to visit though.

Is the right answer, I was daft enough to agree to relocate there in 1991.

It took a few offshore trips before I realised that when we got off the Chopper from the Platform everyone else was getting on an airliner to go to somewhere warm and sunny and I was going back to a grey grim town full of aggresive Sweaties.

Luckily for me the 1991-2 recession (remember 15% interest rates?) kicked in, we lost our BP and Shell work and I was relocated darn sarf to work at the BBC and Heathrow Airport. Won't bore you with details but esentially while down here met Mrs Jakarta at a party in Brighton and the rest is History.

Did work on the North Sea on and off on various Platforms and FPSO's until around 2014, was interesting and well paid but can't say I miss it, especially the Offshore Survival Courses you had to do every couple of years (Google HUET for further details).

Visiting is a lot different. I found the Gorbals an fascinating place….I’m ****ed if I’d live there though.

Were you paid?
Sixty hours? I’d consider that birthday present.

Paid market rate at the time in financial markets but it enabled me to establish myself in my career and make decent money later on. I’m not advocating it by the way but it’s the norm in some professions. Actually I resumed 12 hour days when I did a much later career change to teaching.
