How can a modern steel & concrete building which should fire detectors and sprinkler systems burn to the ground like that? What could have been inside it that was so combustible?

The warehouse was full of fruit which is full of natural sugar hence the intensity of the blaze I would imagine. Tragic though.

I shudder every time I hear of the death of fire fighters. My son is on duty in Huddersfield tonight.
Some families are going to have a sad Christmas this year.

Horrid news to hear. I suppose the worst case scenario is always in the back of their mind, but for it to happen is just awful.

Just got home from work.

Gutted about the crew in Warwickshire. From what little I've heard (not seen the news all day) its sounds like the roof came in on them, whilst they were inside searching - although I suppose the inquiry will deal with all of that.

It breaks my heart to think of their families tonight.

200 firefighters formed a guard of honour as the bodies of Firefighter Darren Yates-Badley, Firefighter Ashley Stephens and Firefighter John Averis were recovered tonight. (Firefighter Ian Reid was pulled from the incident by colleagues on Friday night, but died in hospital). Members of the Women's Royal Volunteer Service, ambulance staff and police officers stood side by side with fire crews as our fallen were returned to their families.

Every firefighter in every brigade will be feeling their grief.

How does it make you feel Al?

Scared? Proud? Wanna get out? Determined to stay in? Angry?

I'm genuinely curious (you can tell me to eff off if this is morbid). It's just that I've never put my life on the line and my job will never mean me being in a life-threatening situation or losing work colleagues. Yours, it's an occupational hazard in the most literal form.

Never angry. Always proud of those who lose their lives in service - I hope I'll never forget them. Sometimes scared, but I never go on a shout thinking I might not come home again. We get the best training and I have 5 mates sat next to me who would give their lives to get me out the shit, as I would for them.

If I am scared, it is usually the fear of failing, or letting people down. When we turn up people are depending on us, and all I ever think when we turn up at a decent job (a big house fire or a major RTC) is "keep calm and don't f*** up; keep calm and don't f*** up." That's got me through so far.
