Did Walker do well at centre back though? I seem to recall him getting caught under crosses quite often. I just don’t see him as a viable option there. How many times has James played centre back?

I thought it was a combination of Walker and Stones failing to do the basics which allowed one of the Croatian goals?

Edit. Just watched Iggle Piggle’s video which confirms.

I won’t criticise Gareth on selection. It’s his selection so I’ll let him crack on, and it’s up to him and his team to do well at the tournament.

Then I’ll judge him.

I've probably seen more England games than most (first WC I travelled to was Spain 82) so I'm certainly not one of those on here who want England to fail - I really, really want England to win this - but my loathing of Southgate grows by the day.

He's completely bottled the big decision regarding RB / RWB by selecting all four and takes two players which almost certainly won't play in the hardest group game against Croatia.

If he insists of taking the two injured players (I get that we will need those two later - hopefully) he should have taken just two RBs that would have freed up spots for anther midfielder and specialist CB

Don't even get me started on Mings.

He got lucky in the WC with the draw - the first decent team we played we lost to.

Re the two injured players, Webster took a long time to recover from his ankle ligament injury and was certainly not up to speed for his first couple of games back. If they rush Maguire back from a similar injury, he risks further damage. If we wait and hope we progress through the tournament, the risk is that he is below par for a couple of games, when we need everyone at their best. As for Henderson, seems like a decision of heart over brain. Fine player and doubtless a wonderful guy to have in the squad, but a helluva risk to actually play him.

I didn't come here for a lecture in communism.

But you are correct.
He might pull it off and be sainted, making all of us on a sliding scale of negativity look even sillier than usual.

It just would have been nice if Southgate had got us to tournament eve without so many reasons to doubt him.
Sure jingoism and club loyalties make objectivity difficult but even if you can get beyond that, there's still plenty to be titsy about.

I wish it wasn't so.

On the bench tonight. Was busy all yesterday so missed all but the fact he was not included in the squad. Was this always the case?

Southgate is going to ruin the best attacking forwards we have ever had. Probably scrape a draw against Croatia, beat Scotland and lose or draw against the Czech. Fluke through draw Portugal or whatever and out. The man is a Fa yes man who needs a punch in the face. 4 effing right backs? No White? Selects Mings, Coady?

He was called in when it was decided to have a 33 provisional squad. It was purely for the experience of being in the England set up and to introduce him to how it all worrks. Gives Gareth time to see how he fits into the whole "club England" thing. He was never going to figure in the final 26. Its a good introduction to the set up, in advance of the world cup squads and what we all hope will be a long England career. Why some think he was going to make the final squad baffles me. The only chance of that if there were serious injuries to a lot of defenders (even that doesnt seem to exclude you from the squad-seeing how at least two of them wont be fit to play for the group stages at least)

The fact maybe White can play CB, RWB or DM . Mings and Coady offer nothing like. Still shocked Wan Bissaka can't even get a cap

I bet he plays a five back with Rice and Phillips in front of them for Croatia.

Any body know why he is playing Lingaard and not someone like Sancho?
(Perhaps Godfrey and White will get on in the 2nd)

He’s ill I think.

Be great if Ben gets his first cap tonight.
