England’s Ben White

It’s quite simple really. Reece James is comfortably our best right back and has just won the Champions League. Trippier has had a brilliant season for the champions of the Spain - a major reason for their win. Walker has had a good season for the champions of England and can also fit into a back three if necessary.

TAA on the other hand has had a poor season and is a liability defensively - I wouldn’t take him either.

Lol.

Walker has been awful compared to TAA who beats him on every stat going.

Walker at centre back. Rather have mings with one leg.

Walker has also missed more than 1/3rd of city’s games.

I think he'll take all four right backs. Walker and James can play in the right side of a back three, Trippier can play as left back/wing back(in Southgates team) so that opens up the option of a spot for TAA.

I think he'll pick Maguire(injured or not), Stones, Mings, Coady, Shaw, Chilwell and the four rbs.

Godfrey, White, Saka, Ward-Prowse, Watkins, Ramsdale and Lingard or Bellingham to miss out.

Be surprised if Ben makes the cut purely because he plays for little old Brighton. Irrespective that Ben and Dunky for that matter do far more defending for us being a lower premier league side compared to likes of Maguire who, with all due respect have less to do generally because of the talent ahead of them. How Dunk isn't in Southgate's quad is still beyond me!

Really not that simple at all.

Liverpool lost VVD early on and Gomez soon after that, yet Klopp insisted on continuing to use his two full backs as an attacking fulcrum and push them up so that they are more playing right and left midfield. With two strong centre backs and a good CDM covering Liverpool normally cover off the centre of their defence when this happens and Robertson and TAA squeeze the play up.

This season they have either had two very inexperienced centre backs or had to put Fabinho back there, meaning the CDM cover hasn't quite been up to scratch.

TAA's attacking stats are WAY better than any other right back - I mean in a different league. However, Southgate has become a cautious, safety first manager who hides under a cloak of ball playing football. I wouldn't expect him to pick TAA for this reason but to say he's had a poor season is not correct. He's had a normal TAA season but their injuries wrecked Klopp's system.

We could debate England right backs all day to be fair, though Walker wouldn't be in my top three. You can see why Lamptey left with both James and Azpilicueta ahead of him, yet had he stayed fit and carried on playing how he did at the start I'd place him ahead of this season's Walker.

White won't make the cut though, IMO, because of his right sidedness. Mings gets picked because he can play LCB in a two or three CB formation. A shame because White is a far better all round footballer and Dunk is a better centre back.

I believe Leeds wanted him the season he went to Peterborough, Leeds had come up against him in a cup game with Newport and were impressed, so maybe at that time we said he is not ready for the Championship. But I also heard Bielsa wasn't keen on a lad that had just had 1 season in L2 under his belt at that time. However, the season he went to Leeds, Potter was considering keeping him at Brighton for the season and introducing him in the Prem/cup games, I doubt we had concerns over Championship football, but may have had concerns over Bielsa's intense training and playing style.
They love to perpetuate the myth that Brighton had no clue that they had a player of his quality, and it took Bielsa to bring the raw potential out of him. As you say, we refused any loan to buy deal and were prepared to send him elsewhere rather than give them that option, clearly indicating that we valued him.
Saints Academy underestimated him, we just didn't put him straight in at the deep end, and made sure he had a steady progression, possibly because he had had that rejection from Saints, and we wanted to make sure he didn't get another knock to his confidence by pushing him too fast.

............ which all shows why any young talented player should come to us.....

Spot on - how I see it....

White’s potential saving grace could be midfield cover as well, but unlikely

I remember reading Leeds were interested the season before. I thought he got injured so it didn't happen. I didn't get the impression he was talking about that but maybe he was, and if you are right and Beilsa wasn't too keen then it failed to materialise because of them.

As you say they want to give the impression that we didn't know what we had but it is obvious we did.

Love it when people say it’s quite simple really in a patronising tone then follow up with an opinion.

Classic NSC shithousery

Nope, you’ve got that wrong. The poster said he struggled to see how TAA could be left out, I said it’s quite simple to see how Southgate could leave him out with three other quality options.

Then I gave my opinion that I would leave TAA out.

Would also add that TAA has been poor when playing for England so far whereas the others have done well for him so that’s another reason why he will probably leave him out, he likes his favourites as we know.

As I said personally all very similar. Despite his alleged poor season 7 assists is twice as many as James and Walker combined, Liverpool havnt lost any of their last 10 conceding 6 which is the best defensive record in that time. I think if you want to win tournaments you need to take players who can do things that can change games. Not been an English player since Beckham who can cross a ball in like TAA.
The other 3 do all have a case but I’d definitely sacrifice one of the others for TAA.

I have a gut feeling Ben White will be in the final squad.

Southgate obviously likes him - last summer he mentioned him along with Kalvin Philips as two Championship players who could break into the team pretty soon, and with these 26 man squads I could see him tagging along (though wouldnt expect him to play anything).

I hope you are right.. I just remember him saying it was a chance to give some new faces time to train with the other England players, which I took to mean the new faces probably wouldnt be going...

Me too, one thing he offers over a majority of the other defenders in the expanded squad, is versatility. IF called upon, due to injury/illness, a versatile player is exactly what would be needed.

I would be surprised (and delighted) if he makes it, I suspect he'll be a reserve and might get some game time in a friendly this week just in case as a result (I believe the reserves will be in play due to giving those involved on Saturday extra recovery time). But I'd be surprised if he's more involved than that now, his time is likely to come after the Euros if he makes a good start to the season (or we flog him to a big 6 club making him an auto-pick).

He’s also very reliable in terms of fitness and touch wood hardly picks up any injuries(also a bonus for an international tournament).

That said this is Southgate so I’m not holding my breath. A half fit, limping Mings would make the cut over Ben.

Greenwood out injured and also some reports this morning that Saka has made the squad over Lingard. Greenwood being out would likely mean a reprieve for Watkins (most likely), Ward-Prowse or even Lingard getting back in, I guess, as the others being speculated as missing out are all defenders and a keeper.
