It's madness. Henderson clearly isn't fit and Maguire apparently hasn't even started to run in training yet - he isn't going to play a single game. Quite a lot of bleating on Twitter that it should have been Ward-Prowse rather than White - it should have been both of them in the squad not either/or, and Dunk for Maguire. Fantastic for Ben and so pleased for him and the club, but Southgate is an idiot.

I genuinely think Webster should be in the conversation as well. Certainly has performed as well if not better than Ben this season.

We can still make changes before the tournament for an injury. I really hope Maguire is dropped, fairly strong discussion in some of our whatsapp groups about this - but in my mind if a player is not fit enough to be playing in the friendly / warm up games then we shouldn't be taking them

Nice! Congratulations to Ben - the sky's the limit for you young man.

I reckon he'll end up in the first XI too. Maybe not the 1st game, but as soon as Mings makes that mistake that's coming...

Though maybe Southgate is finally coming to his senses and we'll hear later today that Dunk has been drafted in to replace Maguire after he failed a fitness test, Ward-Prowse is replacing Henderson after he failed a fitness test and Webster is replacing Mings after he failed a footballer test.

I think that pretty much nails it. :clap2:

There were reports a few weeks ago that Webster was being considered at the start of February for the March WC qualifiers but his injury against Burnley put pay to any call up at that time. His performance against Liverpool at Anfield was as good as any in the PL by a Brighton player, had he stayed fit and got the call up in March there is no doubt it would have been deserved.

We can only make squad changes now, for’new’ injuries. Both Maguire and Henderson were picked for the squad carrying injuries, so, we can’t deselect them and bring in replacements.
It’s not as if we have never been in this position before, Rooney and Beckham both deemed too important in previous tournaments to leave at home, even though both were carrying serious injuries. Going back as far as the Spain World Cup in 82, we took Keegan and Brooking, both injured, and neither performed well when they were assessed to be fit.

At least, with those four examples we had no real like for like replacements, with Henderson and Maguire we could more than adequately replace both.

It’s an England thing.

.

But what is the process? I suspect it would not be impossible for Maguire to pick up a muscle injury in training this week if we needed to...

Ben White aside.
Southgate decision making is about as welcome as Norman Cook saying 'Roll another phat one' at the Weightwatchers Christmas party :D

I imagine that permission would have to be granted by EUFA, who, knowing of Maguire present injury status would be all over it like a bad suit.

I can’t see Southgate going along with a diplomatic injury to Maguire, knowing the backing he has given Slabhead in this, and his recent difficulties with the Greek police.

in case of Gazza, Beckham, Keegan, players could turn a game so worth the risk. Maguire not so much, and a crook CB is a goal waiting to happen. its not like just needs to get match fit, still actually injured isnt he? literally a waste of a squad space.

I do agree on that - if it was Kane or Rashford or something, perhaps I could understand taking a risk. But for a CB that is no better than any of the others we have, it does seem a stupid decision. Coupled with some of the other injuries players are recovering from it did seem the highest risk

Calling up Henderson when we have Rice/Phillips plus others that can play in CM is dumb.

I get Maguire, we have a poor selection of CBs - and taking 1 50/50 player in a squad of 26 isn’t the end of the world.
