Cant knock Charlton , yes they chased our fans when they thought we were dead and buried , lets be honest at the start most of us didn`t hold much hope . Who saw Priestfield being a HOME game , who saw the miracles our supporters would work , who saw DK saving us followed by TB backing his boyhood team to where we are . I cant dislike Charlton because on Fans Utd 8/2/97 they were with us in numbers and we were there for them against Roland .

I try to make friends in opposition ( with obvious ) exclusions , but i have been in pubs full of Charlton fully aware of my loyalties and have come away with friends not enemies . It`s some of the "Quiet " clubs that surprise you !

Great thread. I think my avatar says it all. TWATS. They still think they're a huge club despite having about as many top flight seasons as us since the war. They're not. Fratton Park is shite and falling apart. Their team is shite and their manager(s) is/are overgrown PE teachers. Pure noddy. I hope we never see them above division 3 again.

Mustn't forget a mention for little Reading - lolz. Oh and Sheffield Wednesday. I reckon Sid James is laughing his tits off at someone posting "Brighton tho" these days eh? Them being in division 3 is DELICIOUS.

Fond memories of playing Charlton in the first amex season.
The old bill were out in massive force with full riot gear on, from the looks on most of their faces all having been briefed to expect Millwall Chelsea in the 80s. Made a funny background to two sets of fans generally getting on famously.

We gloat at teams like this and where they are, but remember they have had a lot more success than we have.

We’ve never won a major trophy and we’ve never been in Europe.

Lets enjoy the ride, but always be humble. Football has shown that clubs can sink fast.

West Brom for example, could be third tier next season.

For an historical big club, they have been languishing in the lower leagues for a long time now.

I remember them chasing us across a car park at Vale Park in the 70’s. We ended up in a supermarket with Staffs finest and hounds at one exit, and PV at the other. Weighed up the options, and took our chances with the locals, nearer to the car as it happened.

Slightly mixed emotions with Reading. I mean, in general they're a tin pot club with a handful of supporters, an embarrassing club song and a tendency to initiate celebratory pitch invasions a little too quickly. Some may say premature. And yet I've known two Reading supporters in my life and they're two of the most decent blokes you could ever want to meet, and it just makes me hold off any hatred. I just find them slightly gigglesome.

No doubt we were poorly treated by Gillingham, a shithole I hope never to return to. Orient were never our rivals really, it was just Hearn doing anything he could to try and fabricate a rivalry. You only need to look at the Eubank Jr / Benn goings on at the moment to see that, while successful, the family may not have a huge moral compass.

But Cheaterfield are the ones I really despise, not so much for the brown envelopes but because it's one of those places, along with Birmingham, where I've been chased by a large group of blokes outnumbering us by at least 10 to 1.

We had a good rivalry with Cardiff for a while (remember Laughing Bluebird and Taffy?) though I wouldn't say they're doing too badly and could well come back up again with a change of ownership. The Sala thing is grubby but nothing to do with us. And I've got a good mate who's ex Soul Crew and went on a decent pub crawl with a few of their characters as a result.

Reading could be quite a handful at Elm Park. Miss the place TBH.

Yep, I had an SOS sticker (Save Our Seagulls) in the back window of my car and was walking back to the car and saw two men in their twenties point at the sticker and one said to the other “Why, what’s the point”, both burst out laughing as they walked on. No I didn’t bother, I was used to the disdain from local people who I guess supported a “big“ club from afar. It was the norm at the time. Wouldn’t be surprised if they are now season ticket holders

I was the only Albion fan amidst a mass of Pompey supporting workmates. I used to hate going in after yet another poor result and enduring such remarks as "How did the Seaweeds get on ?" and having the division we were in described as "Mickey Mouse football". If we'd had a hammering or had just been relegated I would front it out by wearing my Albion shirt into work to show some sort of defiance. How times have changed. I left that job 11 years ago so I haven't been able to bask in our current glory whilst in the company of those same Pompey fans.........but actually I don't care!

I was involved in the development of a project in Portsmouth about 12 to 15 years ago. Talking about football and I revealed I was a Brighton fan, it elicited the comment “call that a football club?” And a disdainful laugh.
