Jim Gannon turned down Albion, because it was too much of a wrench for him to leave Stockport.
Gannon has kept silent over the reasons for rejecting the Seagulls to remain in charge of cash-starved County.
Now his assistant, Peter Ward, has revealed to The Argus why Gannon chose to stay put at Edgeley Park when Albion targeted him in February.
Ward, who used to play alongside Gannon in Stockport's midfield, said: "When Jim went down to meet the chairman (Dick Knight) after our game at Colchester, we were all concerned that he might just not come back.
"It would have left us in limbo, because we didn't know whether he would have been able to take us with him or whether he would stick with the staff they have already got there.
"We were delighted that he decided against it and came back, because we still believed we had something to achieve here. We had to make sure the club stayed in this division.
"We would all have understood if Jim had chosen to go to Brighton but we were relieved and pleased that he stayed.
"He felt some sort of responsibility to the club. We have got a lot of young lads here who we have nurtured ourselves and brought through. I think that was one of the main reasons. He has a great affinity for the club.
"There has been a lot of speculation with our financial situation, talk of administration and stuff like that, and I just don't think Jim is one of those people who would walk away from something like that."
The Gannon factor is just one of the ingredients adding spice to the match which will decide Albion's League One fate.
On-loan midfielder Gary Dicker playing against his parent club is another and so too is somebody called Peter Ward possibly helping to send the Seagulls down.
County's No. 2 is familiar with the legendary status of his namesake in these parts.
"Yes I know, the curly-permed Peter Ward, who went to Forest," he said. "I am well up on it because, as a kid, when you used to collect the stickers for your soccer book, he was the one I used to go after straight away.
"Brighton had a good team at the time and I used to do swaps to make sure I got him.
"I know this is a vital game for them. They are a good club and I'd be disappointed if they were to go down but it is over a season, not just on one match."
