Argentina Primera A 2013/2014 – what a finish

The average points system over 3 years is to decide who gets relegated. It was introduced in the early 1990s to save River Plate from relegation. When that same system relegated them two years ago, the AFA wanted to combine the top two divisions for a season just to ensure River never left the top flight. They didn't manage to get that voted through though and it was such a shame that River managed to get promoted straight back.

Don't they alter the rules when it suits, so that the big clubs don't get relegated?

Don't think so...River Plate got relegated a couple of years ago & they don't come much bigger than them

Yes they do. River got relegated a few years back and they changed the rules at the end of the season to say that actually you only get relegated if you finish with the lowest average number of points over three seasons, or something, so River stayed up. And then were promptly relegated under the new rules a few seasons later. Their fans responded by setting their own stadium on fire.

Argentinian football is mental. Going to a game really is something else.
