Or could we play against another side who finished first in their respective EL group - Atalanta, for example?

I'd like to know this as well as I'm getting more confused the further we get.

We are out of the group. Beat Marseilles and finish top and it's last 16 of the Europa league.
Finish second in the group and we playoff two legs against a champions league team who finish 3rd in their group.
If we win that, we are in the last 16 of the Europa league and will be drawn against a group winner.
Lose that playoff, and we play a group winner in the Conference league

It's seeded, so group winners will play a team who won in the play off round. If we win the group we cannot play another group winner until the Quarter Finals.

I thought it’s as follows:
Finish 1st - qualify for next round
Finish 2nd - play off against team dropping out if champions league - win that then qualify for next round - lose it then out of Europe all together
Finish 3rd - drop to Conference league
Finish 4th - out

This is how I understand it. We are now into the knock out stages of the Europa League. It's just that teams that finish top of their group get a bye from the first knock out round and straight into the second round. The first knockout round is between teams that finish second in Europa groups and those that finish third in the Champions league group. We won't be playing in the conference league.
