No, he didn't, although my recollection is that the teams he put out for the FA Cup at least looked about as strong as could be hoped for and then just played like shit.

Whether that's a point in his favour is obviously debatable. Although, to be clear, not a debate I'm interested in having.

I'm still not sure what it has to do with our chances of being relegated next season though. I just flicked back through the thread and it reads like a completely different thread's been merged into this one. I'm the last person to complain about a thread going off topic to be clear, it just seemed odd.

More that I think expectations should be more nuanced, Cup runs can turn a season from good to bad. If we are in relegation form but a cup final, I think it shifts perspective.

The best thing about the close season is anything is possible. With an open transfer window and vacancy for the head coach we have absolutely no idea, just faith that PBOBE and TB won't f*** it up, and hope that they might find someone magic to coach, and strengthen the squad.

I am not getting into an argument about this as I know Gross is an untouchable for most fans but I think the loss of form was down to the manager losing motivation and injuries to key players rather than Gross being quite poor. We will be able to replace Gross but our set up will have to change imo. How and with whom I have no idea, I just don’t run with the “lose Gross and we’re f***ed narrative”

He is not guaranteed to leave anyway is he? Just another thing to worry about though

Pascal Gross was carrying that midfield on his shoulders, especially when Billy G was out.

Ok, in the last few months he suffered from a minor case of death, but that was to be expected from the guy who spent 4000 minutes on the pitch in the role as a ball-winning, space covering, wing-crossing, Cruijff-dribbling workhorse-playmaker-scorer.

If we can keep him for another year it would be great. I think Buonanotte is near his breakthrough which would make Gross less important, but he certainly has another year in him as a key player for us.. if he wants.

Next season's promoted clubs are a higher standard than last season's, so we shouldn't think we are not at risk.

We certainly can't continue our form from the last 3 months of the season into the next one.
Recruitment is probably more critical this summer, than any other recent season.

I would certainly feel happier about it with a manager in place.

Yes. Our form in the second-half of the season was 100% relegation-battle form. And an important point to note (which I think some have overlooked) is that not every team in a relegation 'battle' (the topic of the thread) actually ends up being relegated! The bottom six or seven would probably say they were involved in the battle, but only three went down.

So to reverse that 'relegation battle' form we need:
1 - A good new manager. A De Zerbi or similar.
2 - Our injuries to clear up - and not to be so bad next season.
3 - Decent recruitment.

How anybody can just take all that for granted at this stage and say "Yeah, we'll be fine!" I don't know. Maybe we will, maybe we won't. It IS up in the air, and next season 'The Model' will be tested like never before.

I am certainly not losing faith in the Abion heirarchy, but let's face it you never know in football, and luck plays a gigantic part in your fortunes.

On paper as long as we hold on to who l consider are our key players, the likes of Dunky, Pascal, Kaoru Mitoma and Estupinan, backed up by one or two players making the breakthrough from the academy, l'm sure we will be more than ok.

That said, we don't know of course who will be leading the team yet, and what new ideas they will want to implement, or what new signings we will bring in. So many unaswered questions!
