to prevent the site crashing it allows 100 in at a time i think, everyone else is in a queue, as one person checks out the next checks in, if u are at the front of the queue you have 5 mins to get into the site to select tickets, seems to work fine

You can buy for anyone you have in your 'friends and family' list who has a purchase history. Select the tickets you want and on the next page click on 'allocate tickets', you then get a drop down on each ticket to select who's each is.

You can close the page without losing your queue place as well remember on the ticket site. It does work too! You don't have to sit there staring at it unless you want to.
