Apparently not a ploy to encourage upgrading, they didn't bother to tell us.:facepalm:

Apple has confirmed the suspicions of many iPhone owners by revealing it does deliberately slow down some models of the iPhone as they age.
Many customers have long suspected that Apple slows down older iPhones to encourage people to upgrade.
The company has now said it does slow down some models as they age, but only because the phones' battery performance diminishes over time.
Apple said it wanted to "prolong the life" of customers' devices.

The practice was confirmed after a customer shared performance tests on Reddit, suggesting their iPhone 6S had slowed down considerably as it had aged but had suddenly sped up again after the battery had been replaced.
"I used my brother's iPhone 6 Plus, and his was faster than mine? This is when I knew something was wrong," wrote TeckFire.
Technology website Geekbench then analysed several iPhones running different versions of the iOS operating system and found some of them did indeed appear to have been deliberately slowed down.

What was Apple's response?
Apple has now confirmed that it made changes to iOS to manage ageing lithium-ion batteries in some devices, since the batteries diminish over time.
"Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, [when they] have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components," the company said.
"Last year, we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions.
"We've now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.
"Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers."

I've had an iPhone X sitting in a box at home for a couple of weeks now. I was going to take it back. I think I'll hang onto it now in case my 7 Plus suffers battery-gate.

My iPhone 5C is still working and doing what I want from it.

I haven't dug deeply into this story yet but I'm not sure this is correct... "Apple has confirmed the suspicions of many iPhone owners by revealing it does deliberately slow down some models of the iPhone as they age."

...as everything I've read suggests that it's iPhone 6s only that has been affected due to a specific issue, and not "Apple has always slowed down old phone to make people buy new ones" as some seem to be suggesting.

Don't let that get in the way of some good old fashioned apple bashing.

Well, Apple do have form. They deliberately and without warning irreversibly "bricked" their customers iPhones on the very next software update if they had dared to have a broken screen repaired or replaced by anyone other than an official Apple dealership. So if they're still sabotaging their own phones, it wouldn't overly surprise me

The problem with our free will to buy own use and replace is that's it turns out it's not very free at all

I can buy a new battery for £79 fitted by Apple. That will do for me.

My Huawei mate 9 is an impressive beast, not sure i'd bother with apple again given how many very good phones are available at more reasonable prices. And before anyone gets upset, yes i think i-phones are very good, they just don't represent value.
