Do they? I know there is a Sky tv company in Italy, and also one in Greece, but they are in name only, I don't think they have anything to do with Sky in the uk.

Separate from the UK, but owned or part owned by News Corp:

Sky | Fuball, Bundesliga live, Sport und die besten Filme im TV - auch in HD | sky.de

Sky.it - News, video e la TV di Sky

I'm pretty sure they have interests in other sat tv companies called SKY, but there are probably others using the name quite legally that have nothing to do with News Corp.

The one major competitor for the rights are the clubs themselves, on their own or in partnership with others. I've used this stat before on here before, but if Manchester United, Arsenal, or Liverpool (on the basis of their global fanbase) were to sell their own rights - they could each make more money through a handful of games than they do over the entire season currently.

Throw streaming into the equation and the profits are phenomenal.

These are the figures (from the BBC)

The Premier League has a global following of 1.46 billion - 70% of the world's estimated football fans

Games are shown in 212 countries

Premier League games last season drew a global audience of 4.7bn
