Applauding the attendance announcement

Just an observation, but every time somebody on NSC says they can't make a match they are jumped on from all quarters, regardless of whether or not they can afford it, are free, live in Korea etc. Therefore, it seems many of the people on this site do place a premium on being there in person. If this is the case, then what is wrong with bigging up those that did a little bit.

In summary: chill out!

I love the fact we clap. It just proves we're Brighton and we're unique and do things our own way. Without the support of fans from other clubs we probably wouldn't even have a team to watch in our new ground, remember Fans United and all the letters we urged fans of other teams to write supporting our appeal? How soon it seems some people forget how we got where we are today.

Have to admit you make a good argument but only up to a point.there is a time and place for all things Fans United related and i hope the albion fans continue to support other clubs in need just as they did us,but applauding people for turning up as a matter of course is in my humble opinion just plain daft, this is after all a football match and the fans are supposed to do their bit to help the team in any way possible and i cant see how clapping the opposition supporters helps.by all means go and meet them after the game share a beer and some football stories and knock one out for each other if thats your thing but for 90 mins they are the enemy!

i still blame Diana

Just strikes me as incredibly small-time. I've seen massive away followings at the Goldstone without ever feeling the need to applaud them just for turning up.

We are Brighton and Hove Albion, who cares what others think of us, if they have a good impression of our fans, great. If our fans want to clap the attendance figures, fine by me and i for one won't be thinking 'but what will the other clubs fans be thinking of us if i do join in, as some of our fans seem to be worried about judging by comments here.

I would say that worrying about what other fans / clubs think about what we say and do, especially at our own ground is 'small time thinking' - In truth, who cares what they think about us. It seems to me to be a case of worrying that we better not do this or that incase we are seen as tinpot / small time or whatever which must surely be the arcetypal definition of small time thinking imo, we should do what we like and if other clubs fans don't like it, who cares, F@<k 'em.

I think moat on here are complete melts! I've told fellow supporters of other teams and they have laughed at the cringe of it! I love football for the 90 minutes of banter and rivalry and clapping some randoms because they have had a day out in a nice city is pathetic! Plus nearly every time the away fans gave responded by taking the piss!!!

A Newcastle fan mate of mine came the other day and praised the "friendly atmosphere". He couldn't believe it. Personally I think its a good thing if the away fans have come quite a way and aren't rivals.

Utter nonsense. Every time we clap, the opposing fans clap back. Every time. The best games I've been to have involved a large number of away fans causing a racket and getting involved - Leeds being a prime example. Why not give them a clap for 10 seconds?? What's "pathetic" are the chavs on NSC who somehow think this makes us look sad.

Respect for the away fans is never a negative thing.

I agree. What's the problem? We're a friendly, welcoming club. It's not as we gave them 3 points as well?

So having our own song lyrics displayed up on the big screen, and having our fans applaud Gerrard, not only onto the pitch, but just for WARMING UP FFS !, isn't more cringeworthy

I'd say that is equally cringeworthy.

Can't be arsed to read the thread, but I agree with the OP. Applauding the away attendance is wrong on so many levels.

This. I'm reminded of Notts County away last season when there was a great show of mutual respect after the match. As a result we had a continuous flow of their fans coming up to us for a chat throughout the evening. It was fantastic.

a bit of respect for your fellow supporters never goes down badly. shame about southampton, the lads that went out there and sung in their group all the way to st mary's. Fair enough. You're quite young, and it's nice to have the youngsters converted to the albion. What I disapproved of however was running up to some woman in a saints shirt and calling her a whore, and harassing another fan who was at a cash machine. You have to wonder.

"Stand up if you hate Palace" is embarrassing and unnecessary

Applauding fellow football fans who love their team as much as we love ours is not. It's a collective tip of the hat to why we've all journeyed out on a Saturday afternoon to watch some blokes boot a ball around.

Sometimes I actually hate "new" football, new football fans, and everything new football is becoming.

Sorry but your wrong, it runs much deeper than chavs worried about looking sad. Mutual respect is fine. This is not mutual respect, it's brown nosing, and nobody respects a brown noser.

Being an Albion fan is starting to make me realise what it's like being the sad kid at school. It's the sad kid that isn't bullied as such, but nobody really likes them. They suck up to the other kids because they're so desperate for ther people to like them, but the more desperate they get for some recognition for their sycophantic behaviour, the less people respect them. Even when the bigger kids try to let them be one of the lads, mabye a bit of piss taking or gentle ribbing, they run to the teacher and tell because they don't like it (gay chants anyone!).

The problem with trying to have this debate on NSC is that alot of posters were that kid at school, and probably are that person at work. I don't expect many of you to understand what I've just written, because you've never known any other way. Being part of a football crowd can be very similar to playground mentality, applauding other fans will not gain you any respect, it will send a signal that we're there to be bullied.

And another thing, you can't just use Leeds as an example for every other week. I don't mind that Leeds got a bit of applause, because that was on a Friday night and the way they got behind their team was incredible, and it was spontaneous. It's doing it every week regardless that I have a problem with. Forest regard themselves as a big club, they should be filling that end on a saturday with their fanbase. They weren't particularly vocal yesterday, why does that warrant a round of applause? If anything it just devalues the one that Leeds got when they actually deserved it.
